A Sense of Entitlement
We all know how passionate gamers can be about games and their developers, but is this strong connection making gamers forget that when it comes down to it game design is still a business? Don’t get me wrong great games are produced all the time and are truly pieces of art but when a game developer does something in the motivation of a good business decision sometimes gamers get into a furious outrage. A good example that comes to mind is the short development time of Left 4 Dead 2 and how angry some gamers got that they didn’t use the extra time to add more features or content to the game. When it comes down to it L4D2 is a good solid game and to many gamers worth the 60 dollar price tag it once was. Simply spending a lot of development time on this game would not have been fiscally smart, based on that fact that it was a well-received game, sold a large amount of units, and made a great amount of money for how quickly the game was put out.
Valve may use business to motivate their direction alongside creative design but why should that matter when Valve is very success and puts out some damn good games?
