The KotOR games were definitely a personal favorite, and I loved Deus Ex anf Fallout 3, but my favorite thus far is still Mass Effect. I'm quite anxious to go pick up ME2 next week.

X-Com. Not specifically RPG, but damn, they need to remake that.
Crystalis- At first glance a fantasy action-RPG in the Zelda mold, but it starts with a cryo-stasis defrost sequence. Pretty sure that means sci-fi.
Mass Effect - I really hope I have enough money to buy the sequel when it drops.
KOTOR - Best. Star Wars game. Ever. This is not debatable. Go ahead, try and start a debate against this fact. See? You've already lost the debate.

That's all I care to think of at the moment. Others will undoubtedly come to mind, and if they do, I'll be certain to do something unspeakable to them.

OP also says Action/Adventure. I Know that technically it's an FPS, but I like it.

Also, I RP in my Halo.

If you want to get technical, any game where you control a person who is involved in the story, then you are role-playing. In that sense, almost any game is an RPG.

But I don't think that's what the OP meant.

Still, Halo counts.

Also, the final boss of the NES version was that robot/computer thing.

Easily Mass Effect. One of the best games in general I've played recently.

Also need to mention Phantasy Star Online Episodes 1&2.

Easily the KoTOR series...1st one in particular, and Mass Effect.
I've completed the first; waiting on Mass Effect 2 to finish pre-loading as we speak....37% after 8hrs !!

I'm a patient man...

There was one other I used to be very keen on waaaaay back, when most of my PC games comprised of demos, and shareware titles.
Being a secondary school student, budget was severe
I think this demo was called, Bioforge. I think it was more action/RPG, but I found it very impressive at the time.

Mass Effect series and KOTOR. KOTOR II was alright but not on my favorites list.
