Cheapest place to buy a domain?
I'm thinking about buying a domain name (without hosting) for my guild. Does anyone have any suggestions on where to go for the cheapest domain registry?

Personally, 1and1 are exceptionally cheap. You can get hosting for as cheap as 1.99 a year!

godaddy.com is another one to look at. They offer a ton of good services. I have been using them for business sites for some time now and havent found anything to complain about yet! Just my two cents!

1and1.com is cheaper then godaddy.com, even with the promo codes you can get off podcasts.

Godaddy will drive you nuts with the upsell, but IMO it's just good enough to keep you from going elsewhere. You can always transfer later. If you're careful.

I found that if you go in and simply uncheck for the promotional stuff on your email address, that they leave you alone.

The main reason I even listed then is because they are somewhat of a one stop shop... They provide a zillion services for your domain that most places would not, thus leaving you with 3 different companies for all of your web needs.

Godaddy will provide everything you need under one site, so although they may be a few bucks more, it is by far a better route than dealing with multiple billings....

I agree with KPain. The only drawback to GoDaddy that I've discovered is trying to use the Website Tonight to build a Guild (or in my current case, a Kinship) website, or any gaming website for that matter. The forums are plain vanilla and the interface of Website Tonight is not very intuitive. Customization is very limited and it lacks a lot of functionality that is needed for a gaming website. I finally gave up, canceled the Website Tonight account, and parked/forwarded the domain to here. But the rest of it's services are good and like stated above, all in one place with quite reasonable prices as well as a solid reputation.

GoDaddy and 1and1 aren't that great, many many people have had numerous problems with both registrars for both domains and hosting.

I have used NameCheap and Answerable successfully, both are rougly the same prices (the general rate atm for domains is around $8-10 USD, paying more than that is a rip). I prefer the latter of the two because you don't need to go through all this Fraud Prevention crap to use them (which I originally had problems with).

If you want a domain and hosting, don't use a registrar. Use domain registrars for DOMAINS ONLY, they usually (with the exception of 1and1, PLEASE DON'T USE 1AND1 FOR HOSTING, THEIR SUPPORT IS HORRID) do NOT specialise in hosting.

I use DownThe.net for hosting ($4.95 is absolutely awesome for what they give) and would highly recommend it to anyone who needs hosting.

If you can afford about $100/year, I'd recommend webstrike solutions for both registration and hosting. It's not five-nines uptime, but their support is excellent and the price is reasonable.
