Not so much to make the game more competitive than to make the game easier (where OP's steroid analogy comes in). Modded controllers unbalance the game in the user's favor. I'd say if they were a true competitor they'd play the game legit. I don't know what it is that makes so many jump upon any artificial advantage they can find instead of just honing their skills and improving the way they're meant to: Thru practice.

Let's do keep in mind that professional athletes are paid to perform at their best, and paid better when they win.

If there were paid tournaments for the games people play with modded controllers, they'd not be allowed to use them. I use computer voice control when I PvP in World of Warcraft - is that "cheating" too? How far do we take this concept?

In the long run, chill. It's not a big deal if someone else beats you in a manner you consider cheating - because in the long run, you still have your pride.

Yeah I was about to say the same thing. With athletes its their job, they get paid to be the best and thats why they don't allow cheating. Once you get into the "major leagues" of competitive gaming you'll see that they don't allow people to use modded controllers or any other stuff like that.

And the people that go to events that use modded controllers usually bomb out once they are forced to use regular controllers. Think of it as a wake up call.

But in your everyday gameplay there are the guys that use modded controllers. I typically don't get bothered by them since if you're good at the game you should be able to do the same things they can do. I don't see them as hacks either since I've played the SOCOM games and let me tell you... people would be glad if all the guy you were playing against had was a modded controller. You can combat a modded controller with skill and tactics, you have no chance against the guy flying around on GOD-MODE.

Plus modded controllers have been around since the "Turbo" controllers of the Nintendo and Atari days. Its been embedded in people's minds and some have come to depend on them. I doubt people are going to change.

First off, your analogy is flawed.

People do not take part in the games, their avatars do. Controllers are the equipment we use to control said avatars, and as such are only as good as the gamers using them. No amount of equipment can make a crap gamer good, not unless they manipulate the games code in some way. Drugs would be the metaphorical equivalent of cheating programs, designed to give you unfair advantage wit things such as God mode, infinite ammo, the best weapons, one shot kills etc, etc.

What constitutes a controller that allows you to cheat? I've never heard of them, although I wouldn't put it past some people to try and gain the upper hand in some shady, ungentlemanly manner. Do they manipulate the game in any way, shape or form?

See, I have to ask these things because I've heard this argument so many times its not even funny anymore. If someone has a controller that allows insta kills or pre-programmed cheats to be used them yes, they are in the wrong. But if its someone using a specialised controller suited to their style of play, they you are wrong (unless their style of play is to cheat like a president on his wife with an intern).

Do not get pissy because someone used a better piece of kit in a game, who then beat you using it. Even if you had the same kit, there is no guarantee that you would have come out on top.

Modded controllers are just "turbo" controllers, you know like the old school controllers back in the day that allowed your character to keep shooting without you having to keep hitting the buttons (you only have to hold the button down). They only allow you to fire faster, at an almost rapid fire rate. Its not really cheating since the controller can only fire as fast as the player with the fastest trigger finger in the world. Its really only useful if you're using a pistol or single-shot gun since fully automatic weapons already fire as fast as they can.

If you have decent aim and a quick trigger you can just headshot a player using a modded controller before he even knows what happens. Doesn't seem like that big of a deal to me.
