There are quite a few turn-based RPGs coming out, although mostly for portables.

As to the waiting that takes place in games like FF, that has improved greatly in newer entries in the series. I know that not everybody likes it, but FFX-2 was very speedy in combat. You could breeze through combat in just a few seconds, depending on the encounter.

Oh, and KOTOR is turn-based, just very cleverly disguised turn-based.

Some people prefer the more cerebral nature of games that you have to think about every variable in every turn. Some people prefer the more visceral feel of real-time, where instinct and reaction times play more into victory than meticulous planning. The good thing is, with the breadth of gaming available, there's room for both.

I personally like turn based and real time equally well. For the turn based, you have more time to think things through. In real time, you have to keep on top of everything. It's more of a balancing act.

Final Fantasy is turn-based and we all agree those were great games.

I wish mass effect had a setting to make it turn based. I don't know how it would be, but it would be interesting.

Tigershard has much to be proud of
Nothing wrong with turn-based, at all. Thing is though, the discussion in this thread subscribes to my belief that RPG battle systems are not black and white. Combat is on a sliding scale for many games these days. Many RGPs now seem to employ the "hit the button at the right time" to varying degrees. I think Final Fantasy first used it in FF8. It was also in Legend of the Dragoon (bleh). I wonder if anyone has done an analysis on how the various FF battle systems have contributed to the enjoyment of that specific game in the series.

I was shocked between the differences in Ar Tonelico I and II. Ar Tonelico I was a pure turn-based system, and II is some monsterous hybrid that employs rhythm tapping to defend and a timer for attacks. At first I didn't like it, and now I think it is very interesting, though I still prefer the sytem in I.

Not really an RPG fan here, and definitely not a JRPG fan. So my view is Turn-Based is much better in games like the Total War series (hit the pause key, setup your armies, un-pause, watch for a bit, pause, rinse, repeat). Total War is more typically an RTS though not a TBS. To me that is more the chess match style of gameplay than say Pokemon or whatever turn-based fighting game is popular these days. FF never did anything for me either outside of the super cool graphics/moves you do.
