Kinda late coming to this tread but will toss out some of my favs.
Crystalis ~ Glad to see someone else here knows that game. An excelent game from the NES era. I searched high and low for years to find a Gameboy Color copy so that I would have a portable version of it ![]() The Guardian Legend ~ An action RPG from the NES. If you have not played this game it is worth finding a ROM of and checking it out. The original used a complex passcode save system, with a ROM you can at least save in a more "common" way. One of my all time favorite games. Chrono Trigger ~ One of the best "classic" RPGs, replayed this game about a dozen times back in the day. I remember buying it at work on release day and then staying up half the night playing after i got out :P Chrono Cross ~ Not exactly a sequel but still a good game, I enjoyed all the different characters, the humor, and it had an increadable epic storyline. Super Mario RPG ~ This was a great surprise to me, my best friend and I were both big Square fans and also played a lot of the Mario games. This game is quite fun to play, adds a little bit of action to the traditional RPG. FFVI ~ IMHO the best FF ever, Epic storyline, good character development, versatility of characters. FFVIII ~ My favorite of the PS1 FF games. Had a great story, unique systems, and I loved the card game mini-game. Disgaea ~ a truely great SRPG. Lots of humor. Simple combat system that once mastered you are able to pull off complex tactics and combinations. Honestly they do not make games like these much anymore. Everyone tries to pull off higher end graphics or try to execute some complex "original" system that tends to bog down the game play. Other honorable mentions would include: KOTOR, KOTOR2, Age of Wonders series (while technically a Strategy game it does have RPG elements), Baldur's Gate and Icewind Dale series. |

It's not new but my favorite is The Legend of Dragoon. It's for PSX and it was the best game I've ever played.
