There are lots and lots of different kinds of RPGs, so I choose one favourite from each category:
Fallout 2 (Futuristic) Morrowind (Open) Icewind Dale (Classic PC) Final Fantasy IX (Classic Console) |

1. FF VIII
2. Lost Odyssey 3. Legend of Legaia 4. Legend of Dragoon 5. Phantasy Star Online Most of these are newer... I just actually beat Lost Odyssey two or so weeks ago. It was very interesting story-wise, and the combat was nostalgic. I would definitely suggest that if you haven't played through it yet. |

Another that I am just now getting to is Eternal Sonata. Classic anime style, great music (Chopin rocks) and an interesting battle system that takes light and shadow into account are making for a great game. It's definitely in the JRPG mold, but that's where I'm most comfortable.

Eternal Sonata is a nice game. But those historical movies in between the chapters don't really fit into it.Oké, it's nice they wanted to learn the gamer something about Chopin... but why that ugly style?

Without a doubt, my favourite RPG of all time is the Baldur's Gate series. I can't believe how many hour's I've poured into that franchise and even now, its still good to go back and replay (particularly now that you can install a mod and play the original BG using the new ToB engine).
