Usually based off of friend recommendation. I have also found that trying demos off of things like Steam is a great way to sample.

Personally, I read a lot of game sites so I know what's coming usually, but I buy games based on the tract record of the game creators. I'm a big fan of some game designers/artists/composers and will play anything they create.

Usually I'll find out from a game site. mostly 1up, IGN and Nintendojo.
If it's a game that looks interesting, I'll usually follow the developement of it. Though I have found a good number of games from the occasional walk into gamestop with $20 and give something a shot.

Friends mostly. One of my friends finds the most random, fun games. I can generally trust his judgment...

I like to walk into a local gamestop or other game venue, close my eyes, spin around real fast, then see what game I whack off the shelf.
When in doubt, ask the gamer geek who works at the store. Always good to befriend them, as they know what they are doing.

I usually go off of friend recommendations but every now and then I'll just pick up a game that looks interesting but I've learned to actually research it first. I did that once with Two Worlds, I walked into a store looked at, bought it, after five minutes of playing it, I deemed it the worst game ever.
