Technically I think "Double Dragon" on the Arcade cabinet was my obvious first, when after killing the last boss the two players had to pit against each other to see who got the girl. Unless of course you're talking actual "joystick inputs and fireballs" in which case my first fighting game was The Art of Fighting on the NeoGeo Arcade Cabinet.
Ah, the joys of playing Robert Garcia. <3 |

I think it was the original mortal kombat on the gameboy.

My first fighting game was Mortal Kombat for the SNES. Ah... Those were the days.

My first fighting game was either Mortal Kombat or X-Men vs. Street Fighter, both on arcade machines at my local Round Table Pizza.

It was the VS mode in Double Dragon II for the NES, I believe.
If you are talking about a fighting game that was entirely devoted to fighting, then maybe Mortal Kombat 2 for the Sega Genesis. |

If I had to guess at the first fighting game I ever played, it would be either Street Fighter or Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Tournament Fighters. I loved that game to death when I was kid, rented it all the time when I was growing up and could not get enough of it. I wish I owned it though.....=[
