U R Gay!
Its the most overused insult in on-line games, mostly by teens who didn't put any xp points into 'Wit'. We've either used it, received it, or seen it used almost on a daily basis in our gaming. You don't have time to help someone, or give someone gold or goods, or a hundred or so other things that can come up in conversation...
U R GAY FAGGOT etc Is this really as devastating an insult as people seem to think it is? I mean, U R GAY... short sharp and straight to the point, but after a while, it just lacks originality. So a few years ago, I decided to use a few other variations of the same insult: Uphill Gardener Fudge Packer Shirt Lifter Sausage Jockey Etc... As you can imagine, not many people knew what I was talking about, and as such, only a few people got to laugh (spectators). I'll admit, it was kind of puerile to sink to that level of calling someone gay, as I've never really seen it as an insult. However, what's everyone else's view on it? Is it the last word in wit, or merely an expedient insult for the 'don't wanna type' age? Are clever variations of the insult lost on the modern player? Should an on-line games ToS include its use as a ban-able offence? Your thoughts please. |

It can be touchy. A couple of my guild officers are Lesbians and anytime members start throwing LOL THAT'S GAY around we usually put them in check.
But on the other hand, we've been known to use it our selves. I try to use the term "Ghey" because it's so gay, even my gay friends are like "Dude, sheesh what a queenie." And it gets funny using it as a derogatory insult....I have gay queen friends who use it themselves, hear me use it and they laugh their asses off at it. Probably because they know I listen to Erasure and Pet Shop Boys and despite being this huge burly guy, I'm prone to throw my hands in the air and tell them they look MAH-VO-LOUS! But then I have friends that when I say "Dude, that's gay!" They get all hurt and emotional. Go fig. I guess in the end it's like all politically incorrect statements: Say it around your circle of friends if they tolerate it, it's just fine. In all chat, someone's gonna get hurt and the truth is even with the Right to Free Speech so many Americans take for granted (myself included), part of that is you have the right to not have to listen to hateful, insulting comments. If shouting ethnic slurs are a bannable offense in public chats, as well as insulting phrases aimed at religions, then derogatory terms against sexual preference better be included in a ToS to avoid lawsuit. Or, on the flipside, teach people how to use the /ignore function. |

Speaking of insults.....
When someone gets upset at you for...well, anything really in a game, you hear stuff like "STFU NOOB!!!" and the less intelligent "NOOB" without some other whitty cutdown..... First, I notice that the ones most often saying it are players who have reciently started playing the game (though there are some player Veterans who use it freely as well....). Second, it seem to come from younger gamers who lack any other real insult. I typically laugh at them and further infuriate them by responding: "Only a Newb calls someone a Noob....." Never knew tourette fits could look so cool on a game. As for the "U R gay"..... it doesn't bother me really, and like you said, it has lost its luster as it is an over-used attempted insult. But if you happen to live an alternate lifestyle, yes, I can see how that could upset someone. But really, why should it? After all....that person IS right? If it were me, I would say: "Why, yes! How observant of you!" But...thats just my opinion. I try not to let a child control my moods.

Seriously, if you can't think independently and come up with something a bit more creative, you don't have enough braincells to risk burning more while insulting anyone.
I'm pretty easygoing overall. PvP deaths make me giggle, I curse like a sailor in my general gaming speech (without pushing the talk button) etc. ...but I have no tolerance for racial/ethnic/sexual orientation slurs. Just because "My best friend is XYZ and doesn't care if I use XYZ slur" doesn't speak for the rest of that population or make it right. I hear one slur for my race over and over and over again to the point most don't even realize it IS a slur. It somehow has become an adjective used on everything from describing a person, to music, to a skirt. Does it bother me? Sure, slightly (though not like I'm gonna go /wrists over it). But mostly when I hear people use it it shows me something of their character. |

If I am understanding what you are saying, then I have to admit....I do get offended by the use of that word. Mostly from what I went through growing up, due to my ethnicity. I won't elaborate though, this is not the propper setting.

Well honestly, insults come and go. They're based entirely on trends. 10 years ago people rarely went around screaming "ur gayl0l0l", something else was popular back then. It'll pass, once homosexuality becomes accepted (Or less of a taboo) in our society I doubt it will be used as an insult by the average kid. To ban the use of it will make it even more taboo, rather then letting it be used untill it no longer has any effect which is happening today. It's used commonly to describe everyday events, and will soon be forgotten as just another insult by the mainstream.
I don't believe in censorship (And that includes racial slurs), IMO people need to toughen up in general. I dislike the fact that people expect the world to be padded, that there's always supposed to be some barrier to keep them from being insulted in any form or way. The fact that there's laws against it is even worse. Hate is part of our nature. But to get back a bit to the topic, an insult like "Ur a gay l0l0l" is an instantwin for the reciever. You know you've pissed off a dumb 12 year old kid, and there's no need to carry on the conversation any further if you don't feel like it. I don't mind that they're there, especially not if I can gank them because there's nothing better then arguing with a dumb kid in the chat after you've just killed him. It's pure entertainment and every dumb insult is another laugh or smile. |

I am kind of a cusser too, I can't help myself somehow. However racial or sexual oriented insults are something I rather not get into. I much rather be original about it. Anyway, when I am called gay I sometimes like to continue on that. You know telling them: "It takes one to know one" and stuff like that. Or totally acting gay till they give up and ignore me. I just love being mean at meanies.
