Tolandri - can you clarify what you mean by that? I'm not sure what you mean by user names being "attached" to character names. When you change your user name, you should have the same characters as you did before the change.

On the Guild Roster page, it shows my characters with my username next to the character. I did not know it was going to display like that so I wanted my username to match one of my characters.
