I'm one of the 80% who don't watch TV... mostly. (Hey, for once I'm not in the 20%. Huzzah!) But... world series, super bowl, there are some things that really you can't miss and really lose something via TiVo (not that I have one, but that's not the point here). If I don't *really* care about the teams that are playing, I still want to see the game, but not enough to make a special event out of it.
Most TV isn't worthy of your full attention, but some of it is still worth watching as long as you have tivo or lots of beer (or both). |

I am one of the 20%, I need the background noise to play. I got so accustomed to it with my roommate. Now i can't seem to get into the game until I have something to block out!

I'm part of the TV group. I watch TV while playing because I don't usually get immersed in games. Usually I'll be playing an MMO, in which it's hard to get immersed in after the first questgiver requires 5 rat tails. Or shooters in which I generally will just watch the TV while waiting to respawn. There are very few moments in games in which I need to play without my TV on and music blasting. Occasionally I'll be in a very serious Counter-Strike server where I'm focusing on the rest of the team, or have a great TF2 match going on. But that rarely happens so it's usually TV.
As far as RPG's go, I find it hard to get so immersed in them that I don't want RL distractions. |

I find depending on what game I am playing dictates how much distraction I mind. In something 1 player like Vampires or on my PlayStation, I like to try to get into the storyline and do not want as much distraction. On the other hand, if I am grinding in some MMO I do not mind a distraction to pass the time as I kill so many of these or even more of those.

I usually don't play and watch, but that's more because i don't have the tv and the comp in the same room. I do usually have two computers going with two games at the same time. I switch between the two as I feel I am needed. If I get a tv in the same room as a comp I'll give it a try, but I think one will distract me from the other. If I have a tv show I want to watch I usually park my character and go afk. Friend of mine has a huge flat screen and plays constantly with it on. I mean if something important comes on I can understand watching in playing, but generally it just creates to much background noise. Playing 2 games at once is hard enough without a tv.

It's mostly because I of ADD. I couldn't play a video game non-stop without something to hold my attention while something not exciting happens, like grinding or traveling.
