Site features:
  • Integrated the group/guild forums with the GuildCafe "Forums" link, so that you'll now see any of the groups that you are a member of show in the list, along with their latest posts.
  • Integrated the "New Posts" in a similar fashion; you'll now see new posts in the private groups you are a member of when you click here (note: when you are in a group area, choosing this option will only show you the new posts for that particular group; when used from the GuildCafe toolbar, it will do a global scan for everything.)

New content:

Today, PlayerVox makes its debut on GuildCafe! PlayerVox is an online magazine that includes thoughtful analysis and commentary on the culture, design and industry of multiplayer gaming. You can access PlayerVox here: http://www.guildcafe.com/Vox

Very cool. Any chance the "new posts" button could also include a "blog" category and list new blog entries along with forumn posts?

That's a good idea, but the challenge is this: if we list ALL blogs, then that could be fairly overwhelming. We could limit it to the ones you are "subscribed" to easily enough.

(In the case of groups, there are currently 200+ groups on GuildCafe, but you only see new posts in the groups that you've become a member of...For blogs, there's potentially even more!)

The subscription service does a pretty good job tracking new entries on blogs I'm subscribed to already. Now if it could list new comments posted in blogs I'm subscribed to, that would be useful.

Big Update: April 16, 2007
April 16, 2007

We've just added a lot of new features to GuildCafe, and there will be more coming this week--much of what we've just added lays the groundwork for further enhancements.
  • The implementation of the Favorites system is the largest new feature of GuildCafe. Scroll down to the bottom if you want to read only about that.
  • The navigation bar has been revamped. The most common features are now present on the toolbar without needing to access a drop-down list. A few of the options that were previously available only from the drop-down list are now on the footer (FAQs, chat).
  • You can more easily see how many mail items are waiting from you from throughout GuildCafe, and if you want to send someone a PM you need only click the "Mail" link on the navigation bar. The number in parenthesis is the number of messages in your inbox.
  • The most common search functions have been unified in one easy-to-access interface, right about the navigation bar. This allows you to search for players (it will search their member name as well as their various character names), blogs, forums and the new Favorites system.
  • The "Tag Cloud" has been enhanced. It will now show you more useful statistics, such as the most popular tags on GuildCafe and a breakdown of how the Bartle categories divide up for our members. The link to the Tag Cloud is now the "Tags" item on the top navigation bar.
  • The various "Tag Space" pages now include a summary of the most recent "favorites" in their category; for example, the most highly-rated news items associated with Warhammer would show up under the [url href="http://www.guildcafe.com/tag/Warhammer: Age of Reckoning"]Warhammer[/url] tag.
  • The "Tag Space" pages for games are cross-linked to other related GuildCafe content: you can link to an index of of groups/guilds/clans for a particular game directly from the tag page.
  • The group/clan/guild index pages include cross-linking to the "tag" page as well as the "favorites" pages.

Favorites System

The biggest new addition to GuildCafe is the Favorites system. This is a system where you can contribute content that may not exist within GuildCafe itself. For example, if you find videos, well-written articles, juicy news or other fun content--you can submit it here. Unlike other "social bookmarking" services, our Favorites system is built around the world of gaming--with news/content categories tied to all the same games that you can associate with your personal page or group.

The main way to access to the Favorites system is through the "Favorites" link on the navigation bar.

1. You can submit any web page or video (YouTube, google video, Quicktime or Windows Media player) to GuildCafe.

2. You can vote on the submissions of other people. Just click the up-arrow that's next to the item on a Favorites list. You should see the number increase by one. Once an above-average number of votes are cast for a particular item, it will be tagged as "hot" which means that it will show up on lists of the most current, hot news--which is linked from What's New tab on personal pages as well as the default page shown from Favorites.

3. If you don't like something, you can vote it down. However, you should focus on the things you like most--save voting things down for spam, items of poor quality, etc. Even if you don't like what a person has to say about something in an article, it isn't really worth a negative vote unless it is poorly written.

4. When you vote something up or contribute content, there is a "Favorites" tab on your personal page that will list the things that you personally like. This will let other people see what you're interested in, and help you promote the articles, content and news that is of interest to you.

5. You can set your default homepage within GuildCafe to any of the "Favorites" pages, or to your personal page. To set a Favorites page as your default, find the section you like and then click the "Make this your Default GuildCafe page" from the sidebar to the left. If you want to set your default page back to your own personal page, that option appears on the "What's New" tab on your personal page.

7. In addition to the default "hot" content in the Favorites section, you'll see a number of other tabs. These help you check out other peoples submissions as follows:

a. "On the Radar" will show the newest content, regardless of votes--it is a good way to monitor the newest things everyone has submitted.

b. The "Most Popular" tab will show you things in a category that are ranked by the number of votes they've received. Whereas "hot" attempts to show you the most recen/active subjects, this is a record of the things that have ever received the most attention.

c. "Friend Picks" will show you the newest items that your friends have submitted.

d. "Group Picks" will show you the newest items that other members of your groups have submitted.

What's next:

The Favorites system is going to be expanded in two ways: more integration with the rest of GuildCafe, and special interfaces/widgets that can be used on other sites.

In GuildCafe itself, we're going to make it so that when you vote on a forum thread, or on a blog entry, the content is automatically channeled to the Favorites system. That way you'll have one organized place to look for all the content submissions people are making, both on and off GuildCafe.

Blogs: We're also going to be tieing the blogging system to this more tightly: when you write a blog entry, you'll be able to flag it as a "favorite" automatically so that it can be considered by other members of GuildCafe. These blog entries will initially show up in the "On the Radar" section, and move up to the Hot/Popular sections as they receive votes from other members.

On the outbound side: we'll be making a set of special buttons that you can put on your gaming-related blogs and websites which will enable you to keep track of the votes your posts/articles receive on GuildCafe. The idea is to help you promote your game content and use GuildCafe as a way to help get your best stuff in front of the eyes of more people who are interested in what you have to say. More on that soon!

More Updates to Favorites

- Added a "Controversial" tab to the Favorites section. Basically, the algorithm that makes something controversial is that we look at the total number of votes (up or down) and compare it to the score. Controversial topics will tend to have a high number of votes, but might have a relatively low score because there is disagreement on them.

- Added more information to the left sidebar: it now includes a "highlights" section to identify the most controversial, popular and commented items of the week. It also includes a summary of recent comments, a snapshot of your friends' activity.

- Added the ability to edit a description of an item once it has been submitted.

- Added a "Who Liked It" tab on each item's page, which can show you who else liked an item, which might help you find new friends with common interests.

- The "Score" device now looks a bit different depending on whether you've voted on an item or not (it changes from a question-mark to an exclamation-point version).

- Added paging to each section. If you want to see older or lower-ranked items, scroll to the bottom of the page and you'll see controls for accessing other pages.

Guilds/Clans/Groups

- A new "Settings" item has been added to the group navigation bars. We'll be adding more here in the future, but for now this will allow you to leave a group you don't wish to be associated with.

- The new Favorites system has been enabled for groups. Get to this by clicking the "News & Favorites" link from the top of your group's navigation bar.

- When accessing the Favorites system from within your group/guild/clan area, the first item at the top is the "Group favorites." Here, you will only see the links and news that your own group has submitted or voted up. This helps you organize the favorite links that only your own group likes, without being influenced by the other favorites across GuildCafe. In addition, each item will display the score that your own members have given an item (which might vary considerably from the GuildCafe-at-large score!)

- The leader of the group can configure the news and favorites system by clicking on the "News & Favorites" tab from the setup menu. From there, you can turn the system on or off (in case you don't want this feature for your group), or you can configure up to five custom content folders for your group. By default, the folders are the same as the games in your playlist.

- In addition, you can associate a "favorites" category with each of your group forums. When you do this, it will display headlines in the associated category at the top of the forum. This is handy if, for example, you have a forum in which your members are talking about a particular game, and you'd like them to notice news headlines about that game while reading your forum. To configure headilnes, access the group setup menu, click on the "Forums" tab, and then pick a news category for the forum you'd like to associate, and then click Save.

- Added a "Shout Box" feature to guild pages, which acts like a mini chat/instant-messenger for leaving quick notes to your guild/clanmates when it's not worth creating a forum thread for it. The leader of a group can turn the shoutbox on/orr, and control which areas of the group it displays within

- Fixed a number of bugs in the Event system. We'd love everyone to give it another try.

- Group areas (guild/clans) now have a "Who is Online" section on their main page and their forum listing. This will list some statistics like how many members there are, total posts, and the most recent member. Under that is listed all the members who visited the group within the last 24 hours. Group leaders can configure whether you'd like this information on your main page or not from the "Pages" tab in your management interface.

- You may now request to receive an email when someone replies to a thread you created or replied to in a group area. To turn this feature on, click on the "Settings" button on the group (guild, clan) navigation bar.

- You may request email notification for an event you've registered for, 24 hours before the event starts. As above, turn this on from the "Settings" area for your group/clan.

- When you are added to a group, you'll no longer have the group automatically list on your personal page or in the master forum index. You'll need to turn those features on from the Settings area of the group/clan.

- When you are first given access to a group, you'll be given an "alert" on your What's New page to let you know about it.

- If you apply to join a group, the group's forums and listing on your personal page will default to "on," but if the owner of the group adds you themself it will default to off.

- Added integration with the World of Warcraft Armory system, which makes it so that the Scores and Profiles tab on your personal page automatically updates your characters--no more manual updates for WoW! We'll add further support for other games that provide data for their characters on the Web in the near future.

- Improved some of the user interface around the Scores & Profiles system.

- Added buttons/links beneath the Roster on guild pages so that it's more obvious how you add your profile to your guild's roster.
