Just my personal preference, I like:

* ioUrbanTerror (real-world weapons with loading and inaccuracy when running or auto-firing, but wall-jumping, strafe-running and etc. (originally a quake mod, but now stand-alone))

* Nexuiz (cool fast paced, sci-fi, multiplayer shooter with good graphics)

* OpenArena(ioquake engine and open-source skins and textures (some pretty inventive anime inspired skins) making a kind of q3 clone)

* Assault Cube (cube engine with more weapons realism), and Sauerbraten (based on cube2 engine, probably the best for single-player action, but still not up the quality of commercial game's single-player campaigns).

* Waržow is supposed to be really cool, but I haven't played it much.

I've heard that too. Never tried it myself, but I have seen other people play it. It looked really good, but I suppose the only way to be sure is to give it a whirl.

RE AA3, I've heard its a good game, but I have reservations against an armed forces using a video game as recruitment/propaganda, but mostly it only runs in Windows which is a fail in my book.
