San Diego Residents Warned They Will Be Fined For Discussing Bible In Home

A San Diego pastor and his wife claim they were interrogated by a county official and warned they will face escalating fines if they continue to hold Bible studies in their home. The couple, whose names are being withheld until a demand letter can be filed on their behalf, told their attorney a county government employee knocked on their door on Good Friday, asking a litany of questions about their Tuesday night Bible studies, which are attended by approximately 15 people. “Do you have a regular weekly meeting in your home? Do you sing? Do you say ‘amen’?” the official reportedly asked. “Do you say, ‘Praise the Lord’?” The pastor’s wife answered yes. She says she was then told, however, that she must stop holding “religious assemblies” until she and her husband obtain a Major Use Permit from the county, a permit that often involves traffic and environmental studies, compliance with parking and sidewalk regulations and costs that top tens of thousands of dollars. And if they fail to pay for the MUP, the county official reportedly warned, the couple will be charged escalating fines beginning at $100, then $200, $500, $1000, “and then it will get ugly.”

I smell scam.

I mean has there been any follow up on the matter. What rank was the county official? What was the county official's name?

I mean, I could easily drive, or walk up to somebody's house, and pull this sort of prank. Yes, if I was found out, I'd get charged with Mischief and Impersonating an Officer of the Law. However, until then it would cause a lot of issues, and prolly would do some fun things for human rights.

Also, it is not that they are practicing their religion that is the issue. This sort of wear and tear parking seven or more cars regularly in a neighbourhood, not meant for those seven extra cars, once a week causes.

I mean here, in Edmonton, we have some neighbourhoods, near major sporting spots, that people are not allowed to park in those neighbourhoods during the game, unless they live there.

1) They are not represented the facts right at all. I mean, we have no clue about who came there apart from "a county official". Also, they could have gone a little more in depth with what he asked. I mean four questions by an officer and giving them some paper is _not_ a litany. He was prolly asking those so they could _not_ pay as much. I mean suppose she was running a major business in the same house. I could only imagine a Major Use Permit would cost more for a business than a nonprofit religion.

2) They are assuming it to mean something it is not. It was not about them not being able to practice their religion. It was about the traffic fifteen people coming into the neighbourhood every Tuesday causes.

I mean, I know they are not partying it up like some college frat kids, but the noise, traffic, etc., this would cause is not decent for this neighbourhood.

I clicked and read more, about it going on to say they have the right to practice their religion--that is _not_ what this is about.

So either:

a) it is a practice joke. And I commend the person, he did a good job of dressing up like that and scaring the crap out of them.

b) it is not the practicing their religion that is the issue--it is the fact the traffic they are bringing into the neighbourhood that really cannot handle it.

What a crock of crap. Being in a liberal state, situations like this shouldn't be top articles nor should they be that big of an issue.

The pastor should get the ACLU to represent them against the city
