Star Wars: The Old Republic Free Play Announced
Submitted by LordXenophon 808 days ago on Off Topic
tagged as hot 803 days ago
BioWare™, a Label of Electronic Arts (NASDAQ: EA), announced today that it will be expanding the story-driven, massively multiplayer online game Star Wars™: The Old Republic™ by adding a new Free-to-Play option this fall. This option will give players access to each of the eight iconic Star Wars character class storylines, all the way up to level 50, with certain restrictions*. Unlimited game access, including new higher-level game content and new features will be made available through individual purchases or through a subscription option. “Players want flexibility and choice. The subscription-only model presented a major barrier for a lot of people who wanted to become part of The Old Republic™ universe,” said Matthew Bromberg, GM of BioWare Austin. Jeff Hickman, Executive Producer of Star Wars: The Old Republic added, “Since launch we have been adding new content and refining The Old Republic at a breakneck pace based on the feedback from our fans. We believe we are in a position to help improve the service even more, not only by continuing to add new content, but also by expanding the game to many more Star Wars fans, increasing the populations on worlds and the vibrancy of the community.”

UFC Undisputed 3 Release Delayed
Submitted by LordXenophon 1080 days ago on Off Topic
tagged as hot 1079 days ago
In a UFC broadcast last week, THQ in slipped word of a publishing delay for UFC Undisputed 3. The game now will release on Feb. 14, after originally being planned for January. That means UFC 3 will now go head-to-head with EA Sports' SSX, a rather bold choice as UFC 3 would have held January all to itself in the sports genre, with only NFL Blitz a downloadable title, scheduled for that month currently.

A 22-year-old California man pled guilty today to child pornography charges for getting a 10-year-old boy to send nude pictures of himself in exchange for Call of Duty "cheat codes," according to U.S. Attorney court records. John Kenneth Calderon Basto, also known as Tribal x MoDzz, of Long Beach, California, pled guilty to causing the distribution of child pornography, according to Sanford C. Coats, United States Attorney for the Western District of Oklahoma. Basto and the elementary student met while playing Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 on Xbox Live, according to court records. Basto and the boy talked online, and he eventually invited the boy into a private chat room, where they exchanged cell phone numbers. Through phone calls and text messages, Basto asked the boy for pictures of his genitals. In exchange, Basto promised to send the boy 20 cheat codes, which, according to the court papers, give a gamer "elite weapons, unlimited lives, and other advantages."

Man Arrested in Japan For Selling Modified PSP's
Submitted by LordXenophon 1226 days ago on Off Topic
tagged as hot 1226 days ago
Thirty-two year-old Atsushi Kogusuri might've thought he had a good business going. Since 2007, he's apparently sold over 1,500 modded PSPs online, with one hacked PSP going for anywhere between ¥15,000 (US$184) to ¥34,000 ($418). All of that has now changed. The Kanto resident was arrested by the Japanese cyber cops for breaking Japanese copyright law. Kogusuri's most recent auction sale was in April, when he sold a modified PSP to a 52-year-old Tokyo resident. At his house, police confiscated 176 modded PSPs. "I did this for my livelihood," said Kogusuri, who is unemployed. "Make no mistake." Police are investigating the matter further.

Perfect World Buys Cryptic Studios For $50 Million
Submitted by LordXenophon 1226 days ago on Off Topic
tagged as hot 1226 days ago
Two weeks after Atari announced it was looking to sell off Cryptic Studios, the French publisher has found a buyer. Chinese online game publisher Perfect World today announced it has entered into an agreement to purchase the Los Gatos, California-based developer for €35 million ($50.38 million) in cash. The deal is expected to close soon. "This strategic acquisition will add attractive game titles to our portfolio, which will help us further penetrate into the US and global online game markets," said Michael Chi, chairman and chief executive officer of Perfect World. "More importantly, Cryptic Studios' highly reputable development team and its technology platform will further strengthen our well-established R&D capabilities." Founded in 2000, Cryptic is the developer of such massively multiplayer online role-playing games as City of Heroes (now owned by NCsoft), Star Trek Online, Champions Online, and the canceled Marvel Universe Online. In December 2008, the company was bought by Atari for as much as $75 million as part of the publisher's efforts to shift its focus to online games.
