Student Arrested For Making CS Map Of His School

"A Chinese student was removed from Clements High School in Fort Bend, Texas after parents complained he had re-created the school grounds in a game and uploaded the map for his friends to play. The boy was placed in the district's alternate education school and later arrested, as the police considered him a "terroristic threat". The Chinese community and the boy's mother have rallied behind him, saying the school has acted too harshly in the wake of the Virginia Tech shootings. No charges were filed, though the boy won't be allowed to participate in graduation ceremonies." Photos of the CS map can be found here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/8082096@N02/

From: Rahmon on 25-Apr-2008 at 03:25pm

Cant belived they arrested him and expelled the poor guy, he obviously had some talent. The US milks the terriosm issue way too much, ppl fear it so they end up submitting to the whims of the government. All i want to know is, where in the school was the bombsite??

From: Darth Sirov on 23-Sep-2007 at 10:46pm

The way you say it Altimus, sounds like your school (map) has been ransacked by terrorists.

From: Altimus on 22-Sep-2007 at 02:56pm

theres a friend of mine thats doing a map of our school..he's going to make it with like bombed out floors and bullet holes and so it looks like the place has been all trashed...

From: Darth Sirov on 22-Sep-2007 at 12:53am

To think me and a friend of mine were planning to make a map for our own High School... that was 5 years ago though, and we didn't had enough resources to begin with.

From: Arelos@738 on 04-Aug-2007 at 12:14am

Damn, that ain't a bad idea! But seriously, the government has every excuse for video games as terroist threat simulations.

From: Arriz on 18-Jun-2007 at 09:58am

Me and a mate of mine thought about this as well.. but that's just because it's a really good place because of the layout...
But yeah that's in america.. I can see why they are upset plus I don't have any clue how american's think so.... I'm just glad I live in sweden.

From: MythInc on 08-May-2007 at 06:12pm

hehe that's my high school.. graduated from there in 86.

pics are accurate. Dont remember the mural at all.. but that's probably been done in the last 20 years.

From: Sensational on 05-May-2007 at 05:23pm

Time to arrest every chinese guy that says "It's cho time!", and bomb their homes while you're at it. The world is overpopulated anyways.

"Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety"

-Benjamin Franklin

If you disagree with Benjamin Franklin on a fundamental ideal then why are you in this country? That is the question I have for all of these hardcore A-holes that are trying to attack games and censor TV and strip us of our rights to free speech.

Orwell didn't predict anything. 1984 was not a prophecy, it was a scenario to describe to you a series of thought processes. A methodology that you and I could referance so that we could see the similarities in our own societies. Things like double think, communication breakdowns, elitist regimes, power grabbers, propoganda artists, etc. These are the things we need to watch for as society tends to gravitate more and more toward totalitarian rule the more you let it go. This time instead of a government (which is just a puppet show for us americans to watch), its powerful worldwide corporate interests, that ultimately have more of a grip everywhere in the world than our government does. Democrat, Republican its all the same thing nowadays. Its 2 sides of the same damn coin. Still bought off ultimately by the same people.

"The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots".

-Thomas Jefferson.

Its true, Jefferson thought that there would need to be a revolution every 75 years to keep our government in place. Details aside, I think everyone needs to think about how much their liberties mean to them. Because as we discuss it on internet forums and blogs our government is stripping us of our ability to fight back every day. THAT is what George Orwell wrote about my friend.

This just goes to show that instead of trying to solve the problem they're just making it worse by perscuting innocent people, not to mention racial profiling this poor kid.

Some will just say "oh its poor timing because of virginia tech" ITS NOT POOR TIMING! That guy a was solitary friendless nut case, but this poor kid made a level map for his FRIENDS to play and he's suddenly a threat? I hope this young man's family and supporters actually come down on the city and the school for this hard. He should not have to miss his graduation for a silly game. A game.

I know plenty of kids who grew up with ever more increasingly violent games and I've not once thought of ever actually doing these things.

Our country needs to start trying to stop the problem at its roots not wait until a tragic incident like the mass shootings happens. Infact we've allowed whatever is that causes these people to break to go on for so long most communities and governments only way to react is increasing paranoia and buying more REAL guns.

They always want to blame games, music, and tv even though its completely wrong.

To set the record straight, I never said it was the government who has lost their grip -- they're just allowing it to happen. This kid was robbed, ROBBED, of his senior graduation and dignity because the education system and law enforcement has been allowed to take such severe actions with only reasonable doubt to support it. That is why I said the US has lost their grip on reality. They act as if they're being blamed for not taking any action and then overreact to make sure they can't be blamed the next. Newsflash: how about taking the correct action the first time instead of overcompensating for the mistakes the next time?

I haven’t traveled the world so I’ll concede that perhaps we don’t lead the world in the amount of freedom our citizens have. The radical Muslims idea of control is killing all non-Muslims including women and children, so you seem to be in agreement with them.

I didn’t mean we have to forfeit our rights, I believe in our constitutions bill of rights, but in times when our peace, whether it be on a local or national level is threatened, I feel we do need to take additional precautions, as I’m sure you would agree. I really don’t see this being an issue of the government going after game mappers, this was a situation of someone doing the right thing at the wrong time and getting caught during a time of heightened security. It was mentioned that perhaps he had been working on this map for some time; if someone was going to plan an attack on someone or something wouldn’t they plan it well in advance? You were a marine, so I think you would understand the importance of planning.

I’m not posting this to attack you or anyone else here, I just really don’t think this country is really that bad, even though it could stand to be improved in many areas, and I get tired of seeing people run down a country that I love especially when they choose to live here. Personally, I’m not what you would call a tree hugger but we would do better to focus on some of the pressing environmental issues.

I don't agree with your translation of American's terror-phobia. Before I do, lets settle some facts. I watched 9/11 IRL from across the river. I am a heavily rightish person (though not a republican or democrat). I voted for George Bush (almost ashamed to admit it these days). I vote. I served 4 years in the US Marine Corps during the first Gulf War.

So in theory, I would say that all this Big Brother stuff is A'ok. But its not. We do not need to forfiet our rights as a majority for the actions of the minority. There are many other countries in the world with MUCH more freedom than the US (we don't have the monopoly on freedom any more btw). Im my travel to other countries, there are many I would pick over the US if I had to do it again.

I felt more free in many other countries than I do in the United States. The US is by far not the most free nation in the world anymore. I'm afraid, as a nation, we have failed miserably since 9/11 and we are persucuting our own people for the crimes of foreigners.

Of course my answer to the whole "we lost our freedom because of terrorism debate" is to go full out on our enemies and kill them in each and every way possible, even if that means killing their wives, children and pets. In the future they will think twice about attacking us, and we can still enjoy our freedom.

I still don't see how some deranged kid comes along every 10 years and we take away the rights of millions of others and persecute kids for being kids.

Have no fear though. This is America. In 4 months this will all be forgotten about and kids will be allowed to bring pipe bombs back into schools.. until the next incident anyway.

America most certainly does NOT have more freedoms than "every" other country. That statement is absolutely not true.

(Edited by samhain on 04-May-2007 at 11:36am: added pipe bomb comment)

The US has lost their grip on reality --- Good lord, comments like that only validate how paranoid some people are about the state of our nation. Perhaps the actions against this individual were extreme, but I doubt very seriously that everything concerning this matter has been made public. If you don’t approve of how the government is being run then exercise your freedom to vote, and vote for those who think as you do, or run for office yourself. I disagree with many actions of the current administration and will vote accordingly in the next election, but those in power were put there by the majority of the people (or their electors) or appointed by those we put there. That is part of having a democracy. Our government is responsible to the people and makes decisions based on the people’s voice.

As long as there is terrorism, either domestically or abroad, we give up that much in freedom in an attempt to maintain order and safety for our citizens. Want more freedom; get rid of the threats that force us to require more order. It’s all a system balances. That is the way our government was established, if you don’t like it, move to a country that is under a dictatorship, but it would work the same there. Or if you want total freedom then buy your own island and start your own anarchy form of government were anything goes including the freedom to kill anyone you want. Seems that is what some posting here desire. I don’t know of any country that everyone would agree is perfect but we have more freedoms here than most do. It would be interesting though to see what things would change if every citizen took the time to vote. And if this country does ever go down, it will be because of how WE voted or not voted.

Ridiculous, completely and utterly ridicilous.

I did that for my High school, all I got was a few hundred downloads from the schools newsletter site.

I was asked to do more. By Teachers no less. Never did get around to it though

It's good to be Scottish.

George Orwell was right. He just predicted it around 20-30 years too early.

From: Jerec on 03-May-2007 at 11:39pm

Even as we speak, Jack Thompson is looking up the phone number for CNN. This is just plain stupid. Now the cops don't even need a valid excuse to arrest someone. No real evidence and yet he's considered a terroristic threat. Maybe if he had guns at his house and was mentally unstable I would begin to worry. Idiots.

From: samhain on 03-May-2007 at 10:42pm

This is just the tip of the iceberg of the insanity of the American Public.

When I played doom, we used to make maps.. I can only wish I had thought out a mod of my college campus or something. Would have been fun. Instead we did one of the local boardwalk and downtown in our town.

Strangely enough, I never ended up shooting people IRL in either place.

I'd be curious as to what people could do within this game. This would be way too harsh of a punishment if the game wasn't violent in nature. I hope this won't bring up the 'gamers are violent psychos' issue again :S

From: Roxianna on 03-May-2007 at 07:39pm

Wow. this is going too far. I notified the ACLU in Texas where this happened. I am sure I was not the only one. First off arresting people without charges is wrong. Second arresting people because they are chinese is wrong. Finally arresting for someone for creating what is essentially art is wrong.

Good to know that our school systems are busy doling out punishments for thoughtcrime. Maybe next someone will be expelled for humming Alice Cooper's "School's Out"?

OK, enough is enough. The US has lost their grip on reality in the wake of terrorism and school shootings. Stuff like this makes me ashamed to live in this country and makes me wonder just how far our freedoms will be stretched. This kid has raw talent, but because he is Chinese and chose to express his creativity by modeling a CS level after his school, he has been punished. Whatever happened to innocent until proven guilty? The only thing he is guilty of is being a victim of the times.
