In South Korea, PSP Is "Very Hot"
Submitted by LordXenophon 30 hours ago on Off Topic
tagged as hot 91 minutes ago
A giant PSP plus one lady belly button equals "very hot". In South Korea, there are three new PSP bundles: One bundle includes a region-specific TV tuner, 32MB memory stick, and a PSP. The other two? They're Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection bundles — as game site Siliconera points out, the year-old-game is quite popular in South Korea. You know another way to say "popular"? That's right, hot.

China outlaws virtual currency for real-world items
Submitted by LordXenophon 2 days ago on Off Topic
tagged as hot 2 days ago
In a world of increasingly virtual human interactions, the idea of money is becoming more fluid than authorities find comfortable. China has officially outlawed the practice of exchanging virtual currency for real goods, and minors are no longer able to buy the virtual cash. These rules will help the government control trade in China, but they could also impact the huge gold-farming industry that exists in the country. It's easy to understand why China has such a problem with "virtual" currency being used for so many purposes. Tencent QQ is China's most popular instant-messaging client, offering a currency called "QQ Coins" that are used for purchasing items for their online identity. This currency has become popular among the youth, and now many online stores will accept the coin as actual payment for goods or online gaming. Using this virtual currency for real-world transactions outside of the messaging service makes it an ideal way to hide transactions, giving organized crime a potential route to launder money.
The new law makes the acceptable uses of this currency clear. "The virtual currency, which is converted into real money at a certain exchange rate, will only be allowed to trade in virtual goods and services provided by its issuer, not real goods and services," the government explained. So will this law hurt the gold farming industry? It's hard to say at the moment, but common sense says that with so many people making so much money from the practice, the gold farming business has its own momentum that makes enforcing legislation a challenge. Minors will no longer be able to buy gold or other in-game currencies with actual money, and the selling of the in-game cash for real-world money seems to run afoul of the new rules. The loophole? Gamers could still use the gold to buy in-game items, which could then be sold to other players to be converted back into gold. That adds an extra layer of complexity for selling in-game money, but shows how easily the law can be subverted. There are also questions raised by the new law. If prepaid cards are considered virtual currency, will gamers be asked to provide identification showing they are of legal age before buying time on their favorite games? Only currency is named in the law, meaning that virtual items or even characters can still be bought and sold. As long as there is a stable economy without too much fluctuation in prices, anything online can be used as a currency, making the language potentially vague. Gamers can make actual money by buying and selling virtual currency—sometimes even across games—which makes the very definition of currency fluid. If enough people agree that a virtual blue T-shirt is worth a certain amount of yuan, that shirt can become as good as the QQ Coins that were used to buy it, which were of course as good as cash to many retailers already.

Pregnancy Banned in Japanese Hentai Games
Submitted by LordXenophon 4 days ago on Off Topic
tagged as hot 3 days ago
The Ethics Organization of Computer Software (EOCS) are at it once more, this time targeting everything from pregnancy to bondage. The ban applies to basically every aspect of a game, including the text, title, and images, meaning that it is more or less impossible to include it. Even developer names cannot include these words. Canned dogs had the full list: Rape, Loli, Gang Rape, Sexual violence, Cruel sexual play, Reverse rape, Shoujo, Forbidden sex (such as adultery and incest), Reverse sexual violence, Forced, Group sex, School council, Bestiality (not catgirls or vampires etc), Bondage, Coercion, Train groping, Enjo Kousai, Incest, Torture, Japanese bondage, Pregnant, Rape (another way to refer to rape), Slave, Pregnant woman, Imprisonment, and impregnation. Some of these have more specific meanings in Japanese. Unfortunately, Kanji script won't display properly on GamerDNA. Follow the link if you want the actual Japanese words.

Simple Benefit Denial Technology Could Save Game Industry Billions
Submitted by LordXenophon 3 days ago on Off Topic
tagged as hot 3 days ago
EMA have released a report from a study they conducted last year showing how a simple “benefit-denial” technology could earn game publishers up to $6 billion. The study was conducted as a response from companies who felt that they were loosing huge amounts of cash on games, DVD’s and Blu-ray Discs because of shoplifting. A full report can be found in Video Business. EMA debunked the myth that suggested that the technology was because of Piracy. On the contrary, EMA’s study shows that shoplifting is the main source of revenue losses. By eliminating shoplifting, the cost of games would be cheaper for the consumer. EMA president stated that the technology would, “eliminate barriers erected to deter shoplifting, consumers will have easier access to the products, additional retail channels will carry these products, and costs will be eliminated from the supply chain.” Like many other gift cards, the actual store merchant, would have to activate the card for the customer before they could use the product. The process would involve scanning movies and games at the checkout. Though the system sounds like a good way forward for both the industry and the consumer, it leaves many unanswered questions about how activation would be handled via the internet. This aside, retailers, as well as the game industry, see great potential, even if shoplifting in their stores was reduced by a fraction.

Power Customization in City of Heroes Issue 16
Submitted by LordXenophon 3 days ago on Off Topic

In a new post on the official City of Heroes forums, Positron teases Power Customization as a major feature of Issue 16. Responding to speculation that the upcoming City of Heroes/Villains expansion "Going Rogue" would be Issue 16, Positron debunks the theory by revealing what Issue 16 will actually be all about. They say pictures are worth 1000 words, and so Positron said nothing, instead he simply released a couple of screenshots. Follow the link to view them at MMORPG.com.

Equality Now Protests Japanese Rape Simulation Game, 'RapeLay.'
Submitted by LordXenophon 8 days ago on Off Topic
tagged as hot 6 days ago
A Japanese computer game maker on Friday dismissed a protest by US rights campaigners against the game "RapeLay", which lets players simulate sexual violence against females. New York-based Equality Now launched a campaign this week "against rape simulator games and the normalisation of sexual violence in Japan". It urged activists to write in protest to the maker and Prime Minister Taro Aso, arguing the game breaches Japan's obligations under the 1985 Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women. The Yokohama-based games manufacturer Illusion brushed off the campaign. "We are simply bewildered by the move," said spokesperson Makoto Nakaoka. "We make the games for the domestic market and abide by laws here. We cannot possibly comment on (the campaign) because we don't sell them overseas." Players earn points for acts of sexual violence, including stalking girls on commuter trains, raping virgins and their mothers, and forcing females to get abortions, according to the group's online statement.

New Lightsaber and Blaster Accessories For Star Wars Wii Games
Submitted by LordXenophon 6 days ago on Off Topic
tagged as hot 6 days ago
Consumer electronics retailer, Bensussen Deutsch & Associates, Inc. (BDA), announced three new additions to its Wii accessory lineup with a Wii-based blaster and lightsabers that are licensed by both Nintendo and Lucasfilm. The Clone Trooper Blaster for Wii arrives in September to compliment the new Star Wars The Clone Wars: Republic Heroes game. On the sexy side, it will offer a dual action trigger action that allows users to simultaneously trigger shots from the Wii Remote and the Nunchuk -- which will both fit into the same blaster. The Star Wars Light-Up Lightsabers for Wii, due to arrive this fall, are based on replicas used by Yoda and Anakin and will also illuminate green or blue glows respectively. As with other lightsabers, players will place their Wii Remote inside the handle of the unit. Fans of Star Wars The Clone Wars: Lightsaber Duels rejoice! While we can't wait to see what they might look like (or cost -- expect higher price due to licensing), the lightsabers don't seem to be compatible with the new Wii MotionPlus accessory, which would make for a stellar edition to Nintendo's sure to be popular game, Wii Sports Resort. Follow the link to see pictures of these new accessories.

Three Georgia Men Arrested For Game Return Fraud
Submitted by LordXenophon 6 days ago on Off Topic
tagged as hot 6 days ago
Like all crime, the meticulous effort three Georgia men put into buying, opening and selling games -- only to return the seemingly unopened boxes for a refund -- didn't pay. Atlanta's Fox 5 News reports that 29-year-old Levar Thornton, 19-year-old Michael Cunningham and 18-year-old Tyrell Myers managed to swap game discs for blank CD-R media using games purchased from 11 area Wal-Mart stores, amounting to 200 returns in all. Once the retailer eventually got wise to the scam (guess it had enough of customers complaining their "unopened" games contained blank discs), police arrested the trio, who were found with 400 shipping receipts on them. Evidently, they had sold the swiped software via eBay to tune of at least $10,000, according to Wal-mart's estimated losses. We're not exactly sure what to make of this final detail: The report states that all of the stolen games were for Xbox 360.
