Q. If you could bring any book, movie or comic to life in a game, which would you choose? (Answer!)
A. I'd bring "The Dark Tower" series of novels by Stephen King. However, I don't think they could be properly done, even supervised by King himself. Therefore, I'd probably hate myself for deciding it immediately after it was released and rated sub-par.
Q. If you made your own game, what would it be like? (Answer!)
A. I'm currently working on that with a program called "RPG Maker VX". I don't care much about graphics or visual style, so much as content and storyline. My game is full of deep quests and involving characters (or I try anyway), and simply playing start-to-finish ignoring the extras would net a completion rating of maybe 10% or less. I like games to be massive and immersible, with more to do than any but the most dedicated of players could ever hope to achieve.
Q. Why do you join guilds or clans? (Answer!)
A. I join guilds and clans (or in my case, linkshells :P) because I either have friends in them, or to get things accomplished in the endgame. When I'm first starting on a server, I try to find a social shell as quickly as possible to help get my feet wet and make a few friends.
Q. If you could cancel any online game, which would it be? (Answer!)
A. To be honest, everyone's entitled to an opinion and I wouldn't want to deprive players of their favorite game.
Were I *forced* to choose, I'd tell the Halo series to pack its overrated bags--but I'm not that mean. :P
Q. How do you feel about selling virtual items for real money? (Do NOT advertise RMT services!) (Answer!)
A. Absolute loathing. It ruins the economy in a number of ways that I won't bother to explain here (anyone who can do math can figure it out anyway). RMTs are a pestilence on all but the wealthiest gamers (or the gamers who place in-game items above real-life necessity). It's unfair to the rest of the populace who works extremely hard for what they have, and the illegal means by which the RMT companies make their money often involve ruining parts of the gaming experience for those who wish to earn a fair income (for example, farming a specific kind of monster for the sellable drops is much easier of RMTs aren't competing with you for every kill).
Q. What is a feature you would like added to GamerDNA? (Answer!)
A. I haven't explored the services very thoroughly yet, but I'd like to be able to actually add an avatar for my FFXI character. On top of that, some of the games don't have thumbnails. Honestly though, those are small complaints and I find myself approving of this site overall.
Q. What sort of players annoy you the most? (Answer!)
A. I hate players who cheat or think they're better than everyone else for any reason. Even if they ARE better at playing the game, they have no right to the attitude problems that usually develop as a result.
Q. What is the most overlooked or misunderstood game? (Answer!)
A. Hard to answer, very hard.
I can't come up with a definite response, but I can think of one game for now that needed more credit than it got. A very little-known platformer called Tomba! was released on the PS1 many years ago. It was innovative and fun, but its style (which can be described as "weird" among other, more colorful words) probably scared many gamers away. It apparently had enough of a cult following that a sequel was released, but the sequel wasn't nearly as good as its predecessor and that was it for what could have been a very fun and potentially successful series.
Q. What experience do you have beta-testing games? (Answer!)
A. I beta test many MMORPGs. Generally, it's just like playing the game, except it's pretty obvious that they haven't quit finished making it yet. There are glitches, graphical flaws, and chunks of the game are just missing. It's a lot like playing a VERY good demo, though, and it tells you whether you might want to give this game serious consideration once it's released. I beta tested both MapleStory and ROSE Online, and it was a good experience both times.
Q. What sort of tools (calculators, builders, spreadsheets, etc.) do you use to plan your characters? (Answer!)
A. I usually use my brain, which has enough sense to plan out whatever I need. If I *really* need to do something complex, I generally use Notepad.exe to keep it all straight.
Q. Where did you get your gaming names from? (Answer!)
A. I either use the names of characters from a fictional world I created (and hope one day to program into a best-selling RPG series ;D), or I make up whatever sounds cool. Keeria I made up about 10 seconds after FFXI asked me to name my character, and I couldn't be happier with it.
Q. What is your first computer or video gaming memory? (Answer!)
A. The first game I played was Super Mario Bros. on the NES, and I remember to this day playing it with my Mom in the living room of our old house.
Q. What are your thoughts on roleplaying in games? (Answer!)
A. I'm an on-and-off RPer. It can be fun, but it also gets bland and tiresome, especially when particularly unimaginative people join the fray. You also get those who try to overdo it, and they can also spoil the mood.
Q. Do your quiz results on GamerDNA reflect your personality, and if not, what did it get wrong? (Answer!)
A. It pretty much hit it on the head. I care most about exploration and improving my character. Socializing with people is also an influence, but it's not really why I'm there. And I couldn't care less about PvP.
Q. How many hours a week do you play? (Answer!)
Q. In real life, are you male or female? (Answer!)
Q. What are the proper uses of tank guns and bubblegum? (Answer!)
A. I'm sorry?
Cheese (>'.')>
Q. Do you feel relationships within games are meaningful? (Answer!)
A. Very much so. In-game relationships are still interactions between real people with real emotions, simply on a virtual backdrop. I consider the people I play FFXI with to be actual friends of mine (however I have a strict policy against meeting any online friends in real life).
A. No, I feel voice chat detracts from the game
Q. What do your characters and avatars usually look like? (Answer!)
A. They generally look like whatever I think is coolest at the moment. I've noticed a trend in them having darker hair, usually tied back somehow. Otherwise it's whatever looks good.
A. The only game I've ever modded was Morrowind and, come on, who hasn't (of those who played it)?
I added quests and items to the game, fixed some flaws I saw in the leveling system, and even attached an "unofficial" expansion to it. I didn't do anything that was too much, though, as I didn't want to make the game too hard or too easy. Just more playable.
Q. When you are not playing games, what do you do for fun? (Answer!)
A. I watch lots of cartoons and read books. I also read, write, and draw. And I spend lots of time working hard on the game I'm designing with RPG Maker VX.
Q. If you could meet any game developer, who would it be? (Answer!)
A. I'd like to shake the hand of Shigeru Miyamoto. That guy's a genius.
Q. When do you play, including timezone? (Answer!)
A. I play during any free time that isn't spent socializing, from around noon till two or three AM each day. So quite a lot, haha. ^^;
Central Time. (Chicago)
Q. How do you feel about playing characters of the opposite sex? (Answer!)
A. I've done it before. It can be fun to see how differently you get treated. Male characters, I've noticed, aren't sympathized with as much and it's easier to make enemies. Female characters, however, aren't taken as seriously sometimes, and if tied with a male character in a leadership position, are automatically assumed to be the #2. So both have their advantages and disadvantages. I generally stick to females, though.
Q. Have you ever had a memorable real-life meeting with other gamers? (Answer!)
A. I don't meet my online friends in real life, so I can't say that I have.
Q. What is the most memorable flamewar you can remember? (Answer!)
A. The most memorable? I once started a "favorite color" thread on a now nonexistent RPG Maker forum. Red and Green went at it for months, it was amazing.
Incidentally, I chose green. Deal with it. :P
Q. What do you love or hate about PVP? (Answer!)
A. I love really nothing about it. It's just where egotistical hotshots can show off how much better than everyone else they think they are. I've never enjoyed a PvP against anyone other than close friends, when we're just goofing around.
Q. What music do you like to play games to? (Answer!)
A. I play to whatever in-game music there might be. I feel listening to other tracks detracts from the intended ambiance.
Q. Have you ever had a romantic encounter with someone you met in a game? (Answer!)
Q. What are your most memorable achievements in a game? (Answer!)
A. I try to 100% any single-player game I can. I also try to beat them as fast as possible.
I liked killing the level 100 Omega Weapon in FFVIII. That was a fun experience that took several hours and more effort than I've ever put forth to beat an RPG boss.
I also enjoyed fighting Promathia and Bahamut in FFXI.
Oh, and hitting level 99 in Lunar 2: Eternal Blue. That was good.
Q. What are your favorite tabletop (RPG, board, miniatures, etc.) games? (Answer!)
A. Risk and Monopoly. I love them both to death and back. I also like D&D, but I play mostly just with paper and our words, nothing really tabletop about it.
Q. What are the specs on your gaming rig? (Answer!)
A. I have no idea, but not nearly high enough.
Q. Are you interested in working within the game industry? (Answer!)
Q. Other than your console or PC, what is the piece of hardware you can't live without? (Answer!)
A. As long as I have access to the Internet, I'm good.
Q. Beside GamerDNA, what are your favorite websites? (Answer!)
A. FFXIclopedia.org, Wikipedia.org, GameFAQs.com, and Google.com. That about sums it up.
Q. What are your thoughts on player-made mods/addons for games? (Answer!)
A. They generally suck and break the game in some way, but you can occasionally (although rarely) find a piece of true genius out there.
Q. What question would you add to the Attitudes system? (Answer!)
A. I think it would be relevant to ask which genre of gaming is the favorite of the person responding. Seems sensible to me, but hey. I'm not the one in charge here.
