When money talks, you do the walk. You are a mercenary, and the Zarlors have just hired you to help in their war against the Mendicants. It doesn't matter why they're at war with each other, you've been paid and you're going to do your job. Zarlor tactical command have devised a set of six tactical strike missions that will cripple the Mendicants. You will undertake these missions one by one until your contract is fulfilled. Or until you're dead.
Zarlor Mercenary is a 2D vertical scrolling shooter that breaks from tradition in several areas. The stages are wider than the screen itself, and the screen will scroll horizontally with you as you move. You begin the game by selecting one of seven playable characters, each with his, her, or its own starting ship upgrade. By shooting Mendicant ships and buildings you can acquire points that can then be used to buy ship upgrades and extra ships between levels. If you're short you can also sell back upgrades, but at a loss. You can also find ship upgrade pods floating in the battle zone waiting to be collected.
To aid you in your missions you have limited stocks of screen clearing bombs, and you also start with three extra ships. Each ship comes with a health bar, allowing you to take multiple hits from enemies before losing it. When all of your extra ships are gone and you die the game is over. ~ Kyle Knight, All Game Guide
