DESCRIPTION
Japan's Monolith Software continues its brave alchemy of complex, futuristic role-playing and 19th century existentialist philosophy with the second installment in its planned three-part Xenosaga chronicle, Jenseits von Gut und Boese ("Beyond Good and Evil"). Like the Nietzsche work after which it is ostensibly titled, the game's sci-fi story is themed to challenge society's over-institutionalized assumptions about morality. Players take control of various hero characters, some returning from the first game in the series (Der Wille zur Macht) and some new to this episode. These characters are embroiled in a complicated plot involving artificial humans called "realians," who seem to have short-circuited en masse. Gameplay involves exploration, puzzle-solving, and turn-based combat. As in the first game, Jenseits von Gut und Boese features an intense storyline, told through extensive cut-scenes, that is as likely to confuse unsuspecting newcomers as it is to delight true fans of the series. ~ T.J. However, some of the updated mechanics of the game made the controls seem to lack a lot compared to the first game. That is my only complaint about this game though. This is one of the best RPGs on the PS2 hands down.”

Figuring out every break for every fight was a nuisance and the battle system was lacking. They took a step down from the first with this, luckily I still played the third one and was floored.”

“Not as good as the first or third game in the series, as much due to the departure of the original designers as well as a complete and disastrous change to the combat system, nevertheless this game was fun to play for the most part. 7/10.”

“The leap in quality from the first game to the second is nothing short of amazing. The characters become more fleshed out, you actually understand what in the blue hell is going on, the combat system is actually fun, the music is amazing, the graphic”
