In Xenophobe, you play one of three gun-toting characters looking to fumigate a spaceship infected with dozens of hostile aliens. Each of the three characters occupies a third of the screen and can only move within that space. It's your job to blast the aliens as they leap at you with vicious fangs, or you can unload on them while they are curled up in their shells. Aliens in their shells will deflect several shots before exploding.
Xenophobe features a three-button joystick. The trigger on the front is for firing your phaser and other weapons, while the two buttons on the rear of the stick serve different functions — usually jump of pick up — during different stages of the game. The functions of the two buttons are always listed below each character. Throughout the game, characters can pick up special weapons like mines, flame-throwers, and grenades. Special health items are also scattered throughout each level which can replenish each characters' life force. Players complete levels by ridding the ship of aliens. Special screens appear in the background and display the percentage of alien infection remaining. Once the percentage reaches zero, players move on to another ship. ~ Anthony Baize, All Game Guide
