DESCRIPTION

After losing his memory, Fei Fong Wong found himself in the small town of Lahan. Because he couldn't remember who he really was or where he came from, he decided to stay there and teach martial arts and paint — one of his personal hobbies. After his arrival, he became friends with the various townsfolk, who in return treated him like one of their own. Still, who he was and what happened to him in his past bothered him; he was afraid it would come back to haunt him one of these days.

And it did. One day, an organization in control of large Gears, mechanized robots built for war purposes, came into the small town of Lahan. Fei was at the center of attention and with no hesitation jumped into a nearby Gear and started fighting back. The villagers were scared to death as he began to destroy the threatening enemies; he also aided in the destruction of the town. Enraged at the way he had handled himself, the townsfolk exiled Fei from the village with his only friend being an inventor named Citan.

Little did he know, Fei's adventure was just beginning. As the protagonist, you will scour the globe looking for friends and allies to join your cause, find out who is behind the organization who destroyed Lahan and discover what they have to do with you and your past.

Square Soft's role-playing game Xenogears documents all this as well as the struggle between man, machine and the destruction of a god. Because of its religious overtones, the game was met with a barrage of controversy from domestic importers and translators. It was finally given the go ahead for American translation and wound up being praised as one of the best role-playing games of 1998.

Certain characters will join your party while others stay with you throughout the game; you have no more than three people at one time (much like Final Fantasy VII). Each character has their own reason for helping you out combined with a whole past history as to why they want to overthrow the empire. That history is documented in individual character development.

Unlike most role-playing games from this company, there are two different battle systems. The first system is called the character battle, which plays just like it sounds. Your characters have their own unique combinations and attack abilities. In order to use these, you will have to pay attention to individual character points. Depending on which button you press determines how many action points will be used that round — the higher the points are, the more damaging the attack will be. As your characters become more skilled and raise levels, they will be given more powerful abilities.

The other system plays a bit like the character battles with a twist. At certain times, you will have to engage in battle with your Gears. Each Gear has a specific amount of fuel that can be used in a battle (items can be purchased to replenish the amount) and works like action points. Certain moves take a specific amount of fuel to execute and character combinations work with the Gears, though their power is amplified tremendously.

In towns, you can buy various supplies, such as health items, stronger swords and weapons, and heavier armor for protection. Additionally, certain towns are Gear friendly and have stations in which they can upgrade. Though the process is sometimes very expensive, you can tune up a Gear's motor, replace the engine, up the fuel amount, buy newer, advanced weaponry, and replace the armor for more protection.

Xenogears takes place on two CDs and features over twenty minutes of original Japanese animation to help progress the storyline in key moments. Each town is rendered in 3D and features a camera system allowing you to rotate and zoom around your character for the best view possible. ~ Matthew House, All Game Guide

“Wow, I have to agree with you on every game on this list!
But I would also add Xenosaga ep.I to the list, since I found its narrative approach to be the most charming and realistic, every emoting felt by my character (Shion) was felt by me. It was really outstanding!
And I would pick Saga Frontier II instead of SaGa Frontier 1, since it had a better art-style, a better soundtrack (IMO) and a somewhat refined battle-system ^_^”

“@glenngv Yes, Xenosaga Ep. I was fantastic. ^^ And I completely agree with you that SaGa Frontier II had an overall execution that far exceeded that of its predecessor. I had to choose the first one, though, due to my first experience with the "sparking" mechanic. Though I arguably could have chosen SFII due to the attack formulation (ie: Cleave, Slash, Slash, Cleave) - that was innovative as well.

“Xenogears was decent, I don't have any real gripes about it. Final Fantasy was, of course, good. But I'm an FF fanboy. I don't know if the DS version is any different, but I love the original Chrono Trigger (Still have Chrono Cross, too.) The Golden Suns were decent, never got too into them but I liked what I saw. Superstar Saga was brilliant, love the idea of Mario in an RPG. Paper Mario series is amazing, even though you didn't list it lol.

“Final Fantasy IV is definitely a favorite, yet not my favorite FF. Chrono Trigger DS was great, considering I didn't have the opportunity to the original of that one, either.

Over the years I've played a fair bit of Final Fantasy, but I gotta say the only one I really, really liked was IX. Actually like most of the characters and grew attached to them. That and I actually ended up playing it after VIII, and Zidane was a refreshing change of pace from Squall and Cloud.

I don't know if Paper Mario counts, but Super Paper Mario was one of the first games I got after getting my Wii and I love it. Happiest freaking ending I've ever seen.”

“I still havn't played Baten Kaitos Origins, but the first one seriously rocked my world, plot-wise. I didn't see half of those plot twists coming. Kinda like FFTactics in that way. Also, great to see the Mario RPG Series (Marioi RPG, Paper Mario, Mario & Luigi) up there. Mario & Luigi are the most well-written games on Nintendo systems, in my opinion.”

“Golden Sun and The Lost Age are definitely some of the best RPGs i have ever played. Both of them as a whole probably finish in my top 5 favorite games of all-time list. So glad they are making another GS game! Moving on to action RPGs, I really like Fable (both of them) and The Elder Scrolls among others.”

“Hmm.. favorites would have to be FFX, FFVI as far as FF games go. I also have a soft spot in my heart for Crystalis on the ol' NES :3 Oh, and 7th Saga.. that game was brutal but fun XD And those're just in traditional RPG styles (ok, JRPG) .. I also loved the old 'build a random party and go dungeon crawling' type games like the original gold box TSR games, the old Bard's Tale, etc. Some new ones are also good like Etrian Odyssey or Class of Heroes :D Now if it's SRPG you're talking about I am NIS's plaything XD From Rhapsody to Disgaea 3 I've loved em all :D”

“The game that got me into RPGs (and none of this series are on your list, I see) is Dragon Warrior. Played that to death on my NES over 20 years ago (Damn, I'm getting old). I still need to pick up Dragon Quest 8, and then there's the two DS games they released recently.

Another series that needs a Phoenix Down (and from what I've heard, it's getting one sometime next year) is Phantasy Star. Not the newer online variants (of which I've only played the demos), but the old-school, SMS Phantasy Star.

From the series described earlier, here are a few of my favorites:
Final Fantasy IX, X, and X-2 (and I've been playing Final Fantasy since, well, Final Fantasy on the NES)
Chrono Trigger (GREATEST 16-bit JRPG EVER)
Paper Mario (all of them, you can't really go wrong with this series)
Mario & Luigi:Superstar Saga
Jade Empire (needs me a sequel over here)
FFT, FFTA 1& 2
Diablo 2
Fallout 3 (need to see if I can find the first two for OSX)
Oblivion (especially the Shivering Isles, Sheogorath is great)”

“@DarthOdium Class of Heroes is pretty decent. Reminds me of Wizardry a lot. Incidentally, I could never get any lower than the first floor in that game, because I never realized that I could exploit the character creation engine to pool all of my gold from "dummy characters" and deleting them.

Right now in Class, I have three adventuring parties: one with a pair of Clerics to identify items, another with an Alchemist to create items, and a third just for exploring maps and killing enemies for filling out my Yearbook. Dunno why it took me about eight hours to fully explore the first dungeon, though.”

Septerra Core was a great RPG (this coming from an addict to RPGs) i was playing it and lovign it since I started gaming, it reminds me of The Longest Journey with a bit of fighting which feels natural and the character interaction is amazing!

“@Fallout2Forever I have a theory about that, actually. Since RPG's are the new novels (text-heavy, story-heavy, based on character interaction and working with your mind, instead of just showing you explosions),, people want to get into a comfortable spot to do it. Think about the expression, "Curl up with a good book." It just sounds comfortable and cozy, which is exactly the mindset that you wanna be in to game, especially a story-heavy game like your average RPG. To most people, it means curling up on your couch, your bed, your favourite chair, and just chilling for an extended period of time. And I dunno about the rest of you, but my computer desk isn't the most comfortable place in my house. I definitely love a few PC RPGs (Baldur's Gate, Fallout, Ultima, Nox), but I don't like being trapped on my mildly uncomfortable computer chair, and I'm sure the idea of grinding away 80 hours of solitude in said chair isn't enticing to most people, either.

Also, I hate controlling games with keyboards.”

“It really does have nothing to do with console bias. It's not even a real decision, PC versions are superior in every way. People buy the Xbox version, then pay even more for the Shivering Isles and that's just about it. There's like one or two downloadable contents, ooh wow.

Honorable mention is The Puma Man's The Wilderness Mod, adding TONS of new (and original) monsters, ingredients and misc items. The only problem is it conflicts with too many other of my mods, especially Balmora Expanded.”

“Probably one of the classic RPGs that was on the classic Playstation. Not as well known as the other SquareSoft rpgs but probably one of the best. Great story line and very different style. Mechs are involved and its combo style is unique.”
