"The Great One" gets his own hockey game for the Atari ST. In this game you can choose from four team quality levels: high school, college, junior and pro. These difficulty settings allow a novice to compete fairly against an experienced gamer.
You can load a team from a data disk, or you can create your own team. Each team member is ranked according to aggression, power, injury, skating, puck control, shooting, quickness, fatigue, penalty, passing and checking. You can challenge the computer or an opponent as player, coach or player/coach, or you can simply sit back and watch the computer play itself.
Once you are ready to play some hockey, you must select period length, team colors, game speed and whether you want to play a practice game, a normal game or a playoff game. You can also choose whether or not you want to include fights as part of the fun. Fights are viewed from a side-angle perspective while the normal hockey action is viewed from directly above the ice.
Just like in real hockey, Wayne Gretzky Hockey includes the following features: icing, injuries, passing the puck, off-sides, player changes, six player positions per team, the crease, blue lines, the center line, the center spot and the center circle. Penalties, such as charging, holding, tripping, cross-checking, elbowing, high sticking, hooking, roughing, spearing and slashing, are also part of the action. ~ Brett Alan Weiss, All Game Guide
