The world has been rendered nearly powerless due to an oil crisis. The subsequent civil unrest has made it impossible for members of local law enforcement to keep things orderly, so additional support was taken from rural areas. This was good news to members of the Oil Monopoly Alliance Regime (OMAR), a corrupt organization that prided itself in its monopoly of the remaining oil. The only problem was the United States wasn't about to give in to the outrageous prices, which caused quite a stir among the executives.
The U.S. market was so important that OMAR called upon the talents of one Sid Burn, a professional terrorist who knew how to push the right buttons. With a $100 million dollar incentive, Sid started to gather a force to take advantage of the weakened United States and attack the very same rural areas left unchecked by police. This group came to be known as the Coyotes, and the vehicles they drove soon became instruments of death and destruction. Everywhere they went, oil refineries and industrial complexes burst into flames and the people began to lose hope.
Enter the Vigilantes. Formed by an embittered trucker named Convoy, the Vigilantes hope to put an end to this terrorist threat. Backed by the latest weapons and technology the government could muster, the Vigilantes had the firepower to thwart Sid Burn's progress. At least until the Coyotes got their hands on the very same technology! Now a battle to end all battles rages on across the country. Who will win? That's up to you!
Vigilante 8 for the Game Boy Color is based on the vehicular combat series of the same name, which made its debut in 1998 for the PlayStation console. This version offers players the choice of 12 characters and vehicles evenly divided into two groups. Representing the Vigilantes are Dave, Convoy, Chassey Blue, Sheila, John Torque and Slick Clyde. Those making up the ruthless Coyotes are Loki, Houston 3, Boogie, Beezwax, Molo, and leader Sid Burn. Unlike previous games in the series, the Game Boy Color version is played exclusively from an overhead perspective.
The object of the game is the same: take out as many opposing vehicles as you can using your car's firepower until your character is the only one left. Standard weapons include the Mosquito Machine Gun, Interceptor Missiles, Bull's Eye Rockets, Sky Hammer Mortar and Bruiser Cannon. Power-ups are also littered across the playing field, which include the following six items: green crates, brown crates, shields, radar jammers, weapon upgrades and repair wrenches.
A total of seven games modes are offered in Vigilante 8 for the Game Boy Color: Road Trip (an adventure-style game that involves advancing through four locales as one character); Arcade (select an arena, opponent(s) and character before battling it out); Survival (a test to see how many enemies you can destroy before losing your vehicle); Progressive (same as Survival but with new arenas after each wave); Timed Attack (destroy as many cars as possible within a set time); Cooperative (play with a friend against the computer using a link cable); and One-on-One (take on the computer as well as a friend in any of the single-player modes).
Options include three difficulty levels, an adjustable number of lives from one to nine, a choice of how weapons are switched and whether you want the sound on or off during the course of play. While the game does not include battery backup or a password save feature, Vigilante 8 includes a Game Boy Rumble Pak device built in the cartridge, offering players vibration feedback during the game! ~ Scott Alan Marriott, All Game Guide
