DESCRIPTION
Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth is an enhanced remake of 2000s Valkyrie Profile on PlayStation. With a storyline inspired by Norse mythology, the game involves valkyrie Lenneth's quest to save Valhalla in the apocalyptic battle of Ragnarok. To do this, Lenneth must first raise an army worthy of the gods. The action takes place from a side-scrolling perspective as players attempt to lure fallen warriors to the heavenly cause.
Once the deceased heroes agree to join the supernatural army, Lenneth must then train them by venturing into monster-ridden dungeons. Battles follow a turn-based format as each of the four party members performs character-specific attacks. PSP-exclusive features include reworked visuals to take advantage of the handheld's widescreen display, new computer graphic cut-scenes, and multiple endings based on the choices made throughout the adventure. ~ Scott Alan Marriott, All Game Guide

“A very exciting day going through Lezard's castle. Sadly ruined by PSP battery dying on my hour long bus ride home. ”

“chapter 4 and the storyline is really getting interesting now. Just had my first meeting with Lucian and I've realised that there's more depth to this game than I'd imagined! ”

“Any other fans of Norse mythology are sure to love this stunner from Square Enix. The game is complex, beautiful and engaging, with plenty of exciting characters to meet - make sure to play in hard mode for as many as possible! Between the dual storylines there's more than enough to constantly keep the game interesting and exciting, and the turn based battle system has enough customisation to keep it from becoming dull. Although puzzles can sometimes be beyond frustrating (hats off to the "Clockwork Mansion" dungeon for being the most annoying dungeon I've ever played in an RPG), the gameplay is, for the mostpart, superb. Square Enix have always, to my eyes, been one of the top games developers because of their wonderful knack of balancing gameplay and storyline to perfection, and I wasn't disappointed by Valkyrie Profile Lenneth. However, typically of many RPGs that I've played, the manual is incomplete at best and doesn't even mention many of the functions available. It took quite some time playing around until I felt satisfied that I knew the skill menu and battle system, and even now I frequently unearth a function or two that I missed. Definitely recommended for existing fans of RPG games, but the unhelpful manual and multiple unexplained mechanics makes it a bit of a throw in the deep end for anyone who fancies a first try at the genre. ”

“Finally able to beat the Cave of Oblivion dungeons with ease! Onward! ”

“Trying to beat Clockwork mansion - possibly THE most frustrating dungeon in the whole of RPG history.”

“Got some new Einherjer. Not too sure what I think of Janus just yet, but Kashell looks like he'll be fun to use. ”

“This game immediately captivates with it's (to date) unique premise of leading a party drawn from the ranks of the recently-deceased.
From a narrative point-of-view this offers the prospect of quite emotional situations, though I only found the prologue and 'Chapter 0' plotline to be especially moving (with the latter managing to elicit more sorrow from me than nearly any other game I've experienced.)
Sadly, this does not seem to continue with the events relating to the other protagonists' deaths. Many of them tend to pale in significance due to the sudden and hollow demise of your first two recruits, not helped by many of them being a little comical, unexplained or prefaced with so much melodrama that their culmination feels more like a relief than a tragedy.
The combat is very engaging and probably one of the most satisfying I've tried. No sign of the more familiar regimented and orderly assignment of actions with each character in turn, here the emphasis is squarely on the entire party combining their attacks in devastating coordinated assaults. Should sufficient hits be struck this will enable the characters to perform their signature special attack (or supercharged versions of their equipped spell in the case of magic-users.)
A chronic lack of in-depth documentation and tutorials does hurt the game. It is not overly complex but many players will no doubt wilt when presented with the skills, inventory and equipment windows. Perseverance is really the only way to appreciate the various nuances, but it is worth it. The developers wisely decided to include a practice option which is very useful for better understanding the combat and developing tactics with different character combinations.
Overall a faithful port marred by the inclusion of a of a cutscene displaying in gut-wrenching detail the effects 'Ghoul powder' has on a 14-year-old girl, which I would have been perfectly happy to never have witnessed.”
