Players take on the role of Duncan who loves to go ice skating even though he weakens the ice when he does. The other penguins would rather not fall through the ice, and thus they chase Duncan in an attempt to stop him. The objective of every level is to break the ice and dunk all of the penguins on the screen.
Ice breaks when you skate in the shape of a square. As Duncan skates he leaves lines drawn on the ice; when the square is completed the ice breaks. However, lines on each side of the square can disappear if they are touched by another penguin, seal, or polar bear. They will also disappear when you zigzag.
While trying to dunk the penguins, a seal and a polar bear will chase you. The seal chases Duncan when she finds one of his lines, at which time she follows it and erases it until she catches him. Polar bears don't follow Duncan's paths but they do wander around the screen looking for him.
Duncan does have an added defense against polar bears; he can freeze them as long as he has a freeze ability in his possession. Players begin the game with five freezes and can gain extras by skating over a lobster. If either the seal or a polar bear catches Duncan he will be tossed off screen and you will lose a life.
Duncan can dunk anything on the screen and can even break the whole ice at one time if he can successfully circle the complete screen without having his line broken. A 6,000 point bonus is awarded if the whole screen can be dunked with one skate around. Items on the pond that can help Duncan include shrimp cocktail which will provide a temporary speed boost as well as 60 points when eaten.
Thin Ice only ends when you lose all of your lives as there is no set number of levels. The game's difficulty will increase as each level is completed and players will be rewarded with an extra life for every 10,000 points. ~ Jonathan Sutyak, All Game Guide
