DESCRIPTION
Thief Gold is the special upgraded collectors' edition of Looking Glass Studios' critically acclaimed Thief: The Dark Project, a first-person "stealth" action-adventure game. The title contains three new missions along with updated versions of Thief: The Dark Project's 12 original missions, which have undergone additional tuning and play balancing. Thief Gold was developed by Looking Glass Studios and published by Eidos Interactive.
As background, Thief: The Dark Project was released in December 1998. The game revolutionized the first-person genre by using a complex environmental simulation, coupled with a sophisticated artificial intelligence system to create a rich, immersive game world that supports its core gameplay — stealth, strategy, and suspense.
In the game, the player assumes the role of Garrett, a master thief living in an unnamed ancient city of a fictional past where magic and primitive technology uneasily coexist. The city has three main factions, the mysterious Keepers, a fanatical religious sect known as the Hammers and the Pagans. As Garrett, your victims are the city's corrupt and privileged nobility, whose wealth is at your disposal as long as their guards don't see you.
Thief Gold continues Garrett's story and adventures. Three new levels include the following:
"Thieves Guild" — Garrett has heard that the Downwind thieves guild has pulled off a daring heist, stealing Lord Randall's Sapphire Vase. However, they are now squabbling among themselves about how to share the loot. Garrett decides to go in and steal it himself: His logic? Because of their internal arguments, they won't blame him. He intends to break in through a gambling den they operate, the Overlord's Fancy. Bold move, or just insane?
"Mage Towers" — In the ruined city of Thief: The Dark Project, the Keeper Chapel revealed that the Mage Towers were the hiding place for the Talisman of Earth. Garrett breaks into the Mage Towers to steal the prized artifact. The Talisman of Earth is being held in the central tower of the Mage Towers, secured by spells. To free the item, Garrett must find his way through each of the towers to find the keys that will unlock the Talisman Room.
"Songs of the Caverns" — Garrett searches for the Talisman of Water which has been hidden in an underground cavern deep below the city. However, he soon learns that someone else has already stolen the item and his only clues as to who has beat him to it are the ravings of a lunatic hermit.
On the day of Thief Gold's release, Paul Neurath, the Managing Director of Looking Glass Studios commented, "We have refined and improved the classic Thief: The Dark Project missions as well as come up with three suspenseful new levels (and a few surprises) which continue the saga of Garrett."
Thief Gold also includes an AVI movie, The Making of Thief 2: The Metal Age, which features interviews with many of the Thief development team members. ~ Michael L. House, All Game Guide
