Blue Byte's real-time computer civilization simulator re-settles on DS in this extensively customized port, courtesy of Ubisoft and GameStop. As in the 1996 PC original, players take responsibility for the growth and well-being of one of four ancient empires: Romans, Vikings, Asians, or Nubians. Early in the game, making the best use of local resources will be crucial to survival. As the civilization's capital city develops, trade becomes important, and strategically laid-out roads and commerce buildings can lead to empowering profits. To protect this wealth and power — if not to gain more of it — a strong military soon becomes a wise investment, and six levels of soldiers can be conscripted to keep the peace. A "Freeplay" mode leaves world domination to fate and skillful leadership, while two scripted campaigns, "Roman" and "World," promise over 100 hundred hours of challenging play. ~ T.J.
