The Settlers series represents a gentle, humorous approach to empire-building and strategy. While the basic gameplay concepts are similar to those found in titles like Age of Empires or Sid Meier's Colonization, the Settlers' attitude is much more light-hearted and "family-appropriate." Settlers games have very little graphic violence and no blood or gore. Characters are cute and pudgy, accented with amusing animations as they work and play. Players begin with a small tribe of settlers, seemingly alone in the world, who set forth to tame the land and create a new civilization.
Three races are available for play in Settlers IV - the Mayans, the Romans, and the Vikings - with a fourth "Dark Tribe" adversary controlled by the computer. This edition in the series returns focus to economics and balance, as a strong military will depend upon a thriving community for support. The game's graphics have been greatly refined for this version and a new feature allows players to zoom in for an up-close view of their busy little citizens. Online play is available for free to those who have a connection to the Internet, through developer/publisher Blue Byte Software. ~ T.J. Deci, All Game Guide
