In 1994 the Japan team was victorious in the King of Fighters tournament, winning them the honor of fighting against the tournament's sponsor on his aircraft carrier the Blacknoah. That sponsor turned out to be no other than Rugal Bernstein, a rich man and strong fighter who coated his defeated opponents in metal to preserve as statues. Benimaru Nikaido and Goro Daimon each went up against Rugal in turn, but were both defeated. Kyo however was able to summon the energy within him to defeat Rugal. But Rugal would not concede defeat so easily, and started the self-destruct sequence. With seconds to spare, the Japan team escaped from the carrier before it exploded in a ball of fire.
It's now 1995. With Rugal dead no one thought there would be another King of Fighters tournament. But a series of mysterious invitations marked with the letter "R" again went out to the best fighters in the world. Seven of the eight teams from 1994 returned, along with one new team.
SNK's 2D fighting game King of Fighters '95 features the same team play that made the 94 version innovative. Players can choose a team of three fighters out of eight teams. But this time players can also choose three fighters from different groups for custom teams. The CPU also has the option of choosing custom teams to fight against player teams with. The team members fight one by one until all the members of one team are defeated.
The power meter based desperation system from 94 is back in this game. Players can use their desperation moves whenever their health drops below a certain amount, or whenever their power meter is fully charged. The power meter can be charged by taking damage, or with a special charge technique. Fighters can also dodge incoming attacks or perform quick defensive attacks.
Of the eight teams from King of Fighters '94, only the sports based Team USA fails to make a return appearance. Their place is taken by a new team composed of old SNK characters Billy Kane and Eiji Kisaragi, and newcomer Iori Yagami. ~ Kyle Knight, All Game Guide
