DESCRIPTION

Settle in for the story of Luke fon Fabre and his adventures in Tales of the Abyss, a magical story about the value of friendship and sacrifice. As Luke, you begin inside your family's manor, a quiet character shut away from the world due to a terrible case of amnesia caused by the shock of being kidnapped years ago. Shattering your solitude, a girl named Tear breaks into the castle and the two of you are transported far from the safety of your family home. Luke can roam freely through his environment, uncovering treasure chests, magical items, and enemies to increase his skills as a fighter, and sorcerer.

The land is full of subatomic particles created from such elements as light, dark, air, earth, fire, and water called Fonons, and the protagonist can master the make-up of a particular area by using attacks that are based in one of six particles. Luke can charge-up normal actions to become super assaults by using moves that require the primary Fonon found within that environment. As in other RPG titles, Luke will meet people along the way including Mieu and Jade who will join your party and provide back-up during squabbles. The game gives you the option of controlling Luke directly or allowing the computer to fight for you.

Elemental attacks can be made stronger by using fon slot chambers to add special effects such as power, damage, and health increases, and as your characters level up, you can distribute over 80 unlockable attributes to 20 different capacity cores that affect Luke and members of his posse in such ways as physical, fonic attack, and defense points. As you journey through your main quest of uncovering Luke's affiliation with the Order of Lorelei, there will be side activities to break up gameplay that include cooking tasty meals to increase attributes and unlocking costumes such as swimsuits and formal wear. You can journey alone or invite up to three friends to play along as characters in Luke's party. ~ Gracie Leach, All Game Guide

“Man ... really sorry to hear that they are going under. With the crazy amount of money it costs to create high quality games in the industry, and in this economy, there just aren't very many developers or publishers that have the money for good advertising. A lot of it is word-of-mouth these days for games without big names behind them.

Speaking of developers going under, it sounds like Sony will be dropping Zipper soon. I really liked MAG, but I couldn't get anyone into playing SOCOM 4 with me. No big surprise there though, there are too many good shooters.”

“Xenogears was decent, I don't have any real gripes about it. Final Fantasy was, of course, good. But I'm an FF fanboy. I don't know if the DS version is any different, but I love the original Chrono Trigger (Still have Chrono Cross, too.) The Golden Suns were decent, never got too into them but I liked what I saw. Superstar Saga was brilliant, love the idea of Mario in an RPG. Paper Mario series is amazing, even though you didn't list it lol.

“Final Fantasy IV is definitely a favorite, yet not my favorite FF. Chrono Trigger DS was great, considering I didn't have the opportunity to the original of that one, either.

Over the years I've played a fair bit of Final Fantasy, but I gotta say the only one I really, really liked was IX. Actually like most of the characters and grew attached to them. That and I actually ended up playing it after VIII, and Zidane was a refreshing change of pace from Squall and Cloud.

I don't know if Paper Mario counts, but Super Paper Mario was one of the first games I got after getting my Wii and I love it. Happiest freaking ending I've ever seen.”

“I still havn't played Baten Kaitos Origins, but the first one seriously rocked my world, plot-wise. I didn't see half of those plot twists coming. Kinda like FFTactics in that way. Also, great to see the Mario RPG Series (Marioi RPG, Paper Mario, Mario & Luigi) up there. Mario & Luigi are the most well-written games on Nintendo systems, in my opinion.”

“Golden Sun and The Lost Age are definitely some of the best RPGs i have ever played. Both of them as a whole probably finish in my top 5 favorite games of all-time list. So glad they are making another GS game! Moving on to action RPGs, I really like Fable (both of them) and The Elder Scrolls among others.”

Xenogears is definitely in my top list as well.

Some of my favorites are SMT: Persona 1-4, Xenosaga 1-3, Ultima: Exudes, Star Ocean 1-4, Grandia 1-2, Final Fantasy 1, 4, 6, 7, 8, & 10, Earthbound, AR Tonelico 1, 2, Shadowgate, Disgaea 1-3...I'll stop there.

So which ones have you played, like, or dislike Mammoth?

Though I never quite completed either of the Star Oceans or FF10.

I tend to forget most RPGs that I don't like. Nothing on your list is something I dislike. The only RPG that I can think of that I actually disliked was Septerra Core. There are quite a few that I feel neutral about or disappointed about though...”

I usually can tolerate a lot coming for a video game. I really REALLY pushed to finish Shining Tears I wanted to kill myself halfway through that game.

“Hmm.. favorites would have to be FFX, FFVI as far as FF games go. I also have a soft spot in my heart for Crystalis on the ol' NES :3 Oh, and 7th Saga.. that game was brutal but fun XD And those're just in traditional RPG styles (ok, JRPG) .. I also loved the old 'build a random party and go dungeon crawling' type games like the original gold box TSR games, the old Bard's Tale, etc. Some new ones are also good like Etrian Odyssey or Class of Heroes :D Now if it's SRPG you're talking about I am NIS's plaything XD From Rhapsody to Disgaea 3 I've loved em all :D”

“The game that got me into RPGs (and none of this series are on your list, I see) is Dragon Warrior. Played that to death on my NES over 20 years ago (Damn, I'm getting old). I still need to pick up Dragon Quest 8, and then there's the two DS games they released recently.

Another series that needs a Phoenix Down (and from what I've heard, it's getting one sometime next year) is Phantasy Star. Not the newer online variants (of which I've only played the demos), but the old-school, SMS Phantasy Star.

From the series described earlier, here are a few of my favorites:
Final Fantasy IX, X, and X-2 (and I've been playing Final Fantasy since, well, Final Fantasy on the NES)
Chrono Trigger (GREATEST 16-bit JRPG EVER)
Paper Mario (all of them, you can't really go wrong with this series)
Mario & Luigi:Superstar Saga
Jade Empire (needs me a sequel over here)
FFT, FFTA 1& 2
Diablo 2
Fallout 3 (need to see if I can find the first two for OSX)
Oblivion (especially the Shivering Isles, Sheogorath is great)”

“@DarthOdium Class of Heroes is pretty decent. Reminds me of Wizardry a lot. Incidentally, I could never get any lower than the first floor in that game, because I never realized that I could exploit the character creation engine to pool all of my gold from "dummy characters" and deleting them.

Right now in Class, I have three adventuring parties: one with a pair of Clerics to identify items, another with an Alchemist to create items, and a third just for exploring maps and killing enemies for filling out my Yearbook. Dunno why it took me about eight hours to fully explore the first dungeon, though.”

@WillyFourEyes I remember Wizardry the only one I play was Wizardry VI: Bane of the Cosmic Forge that takes me back, good old dungeon crawlers. I need to jump back into CoH because I stopped playing when Devil Survivor came out and never beat it.

Septerra Core was a great RPG (this coming from an addict to RPGs) i was playing it and lovign it since I started gaming, it reminds me of The Longest Journey with a bit of fighting which feels natural and the character interaction is amazing!

“@Fallout2Forever I have a theory about that, actually. Since RPG's are the new novels (text-heavy, story-heavy, based on character interaction and working with your mind, instead of just showing you explosions),, people want to get into a comfortable spot to do it. Think about the expression, "Curl up with a good book." It just sounds comfortable and cozy, which is exactly the mindset that you wanna be in to game, especially a story-heavy game like your average RPG. To most people, it means curling up on your couch, your bed, your favourite chair, and just chilling for an extended period of time. And I dunno about the rest of you, but my computer desk isn't the most comfortable place in my house. I definitely love a few PC RPGs (Baldur's Gate, Fallout, Ultima, Nox), but I don't like being trapped on my mildly uncomfortable computer chair, and I'm sure the idea of grinding away 80 hours of solitude in said chair isn't enticing to most people, either.

Also, I hate controlling games with keyboards.”

Seriously, do some research on some of the best mods for both of those games, and you'll see what I mean.”

“It really does have nothing to do with console bias. It's not even a real decision, PC versions are superior in every way. People buy the Xbox version, then pay even more for the Shivering Isles and that's just about it. There's like one or two downloadable contents, ooh wow.

Almost unlimited mods for the PC versions of both. Me, personally? I can't imagine starting up vanilla Morrowind anymore, I can think of at least 20 mods I simply couldn't play that game without.”

Better Bodies
Better Heads
Tamriel Rebuilt (Map 1 & 2)

Wakim's Game Balancers, which include:
-Improved NPC spellcasting
-Overall improved game settings
-Improved faction mechanics
-Improved dialogue mechanics
-Improved spell effects and spellcasting and mechanics
-Improved, and better balanced, starting bonuses
-Improved, and better balanced, stats (such as weights and damages) to almost every single item in the game.

Various mods by LDones and WDog including:
-Improved dodge mechanics
-Improved armour effects
-Improved sneak mechanics
-Houses and most businesses, except Inns, lock their doors at night.

Balmora Expanded
Clean Better Caldera
No Glow (to make enchanted weapons/armour no longer look like they're wrapped in plastic wrap)

Sandman101's H.E.L.L.U.V.A. series, which adds 1594 completely original weapons and I am not sure how many armours it adds but I am confident it is well over 1000 as well.

Last but not least, and possibly one of the best mods of all time, Necessities of Morrowind. An absolutely fabulous mod that adds drunken scripts, fatigue scripts, sleeping eating and drinking scripts. I love it!

Honorable mention is The Puma Man's The Wilderness Mod, adding TONS of new (and original) monsters, ingredients and misc items. The only problem is it conflicts with too many other of my mods, especially Balmora Expanded.”
