As an expansion and follow up to Sierra Studios' 1999 release of SWAT 3: Close Quarters Battle, SWAT 3: Elite Edition includes not only the original 16 missions found in CQB but adds another six and implements multiplayer capability for the first time in the series. Although at heart a first-person shooter, SWAT 3: Elite Edition combines tactical and attack planning with the onscreen action.

Utilizing the support offered at www.won.net, up to ten players can duke it out in three possible multiplayer modes: Deathmatch, Competitive, a tournament style venue, or by forming alliances with the opposing team and joining forces to overcome specific mission objectives in Co-Op. The multiplayer features, also available for LAN play, are the same as those included in SWAT 3: Battle Plan.

The missions and gameplay, as in SWAT 3: Close Quarters Battle, are patterned after real life experiences of the Los Angeles Police Department's Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team. Motion-capture technology, cutting edge computer intelligence, a real world physics engine and the close cooperation of actual L.A.P.D. SWAT members serve as integral design aspects to the SWAT 3 series.

SWAT 3: Elite Edition also comes with a proprietary level editor, tools for creation and customization of weapons and personalization of characters through the use of a skin editor. Photographic resources for faces and clothing are used to create real world characters out of 3D models, complemented by dynamic lighting intertwined with photo realistic built-to-scale environments.
