“For many of us, this was our first NES game. Why? Because we simply did not have any others. Ooh, yes, there was Duck Hunt... but that %#**$%@^&$*% Dog... and MAYBE... MAYBE World Class Track and Field... but that third one really does not actually count as a game.
Or at least, not one that people enjoy playing. Unless you are complete and total masochists. Which is why you like gamer girls... we tend to be the doms...
Anyways, this has the basic game play of a 2d Side Scroller. Though, you cannot go backwards. Only forwards. Enemies in your way. Tough jumps. And theme based levels.
Now, while I am going to rate this as one of the better of the genre, I am going to say, that this will not attract people from outside the genre.
As for most of us--this was one of our first experiences with Side Scrollers on the NES. Anybody who goes to play this today, it is not going to be their first side scroller--especially if they are use to other genres.
Keep this in mind in the reviews.
Now, the level design is fairly bland here. I mean, even getting to worlds 4,5,6,7--you are only getting to what should maybe have been more present in the first few levels. I mean, yes, it was the first Mario game on the NES. So people had to get use to the controls and the general idea of how it works. I understand that.
Yes, it is a better one of the genre (2 stars would be a "meh--play only if you really enjoy the genre" and 1 star is "NUKE IT FROM ORBIT". However, if I was talking to somebody who had never seen a side scroller in their life, this would not be the one that I introduce them to the genre to get them hooked.
Also it is not really digital crack...except... how I play it.
Graphics I will excuse. Nintendo was making their first console debue. They had only bad a few Arcade Games Prior and the Game and Watch stuff. This, is generally on a better quality than the graphics of those.
Also, since this was the first game console after the crash, the graphics to be compared to are well--stuff on the Atari, C=64, Colecovision and Intellivision. So, it passed those with flying colours... owh... wow.. does it pass those.
The thing is, the game play is kind of blah--unless you do what I do... I add challenges to it.
I have kind of noticed how a lot of my dying, I could have saved myself while looking like I am fluking out. I am mostly moving this "Free Style Mario Boarding" to my Lost Levels play...
The idea is to think of the levels as well--how a Skate Boarder would look at furniture, plants, dogs, concrete fixtures, goldfish, trees, carp, breakfast cereals, fruit bats, etc.
The idea is that anything is able to be used for some kind of tricky ump of move.
Then, go through this game, trying to do most of the stuff I am doing only because it looks cool to do. Mind you, since the levels are pretty empty, this is not hard to do,
Most of the "tricks" I got from watching Super Mario Nightmare on Youtube. They are required in that game... when done in this one... they just look really cool.
It takes in down to timing, knowing what is coming up in the level, and doing stuff for the sake of cool.
If done right the resulting tricks can be pretty impressive.”

“I decided to try getting though as much of Super Mario Bros. as I could without using warp zones. Got to World 5-4 and kept dying at the giant spinning fire bar until GAME OVER. Played for a half...”
