Like its predecessor Street Fighter II, Street Fighter Alpha is a 2D fighting game that employs special techniques like fireballs and dragon punches, but also adds in super techniques. Each fighter has a meter that can be charged up to three levels. Every time a fighter attacks, his or her meter is charged a bit. When the meter has one or more levels filled, that fighter can perform a super technique that inflicts a great deal of damage.
Alternatively, players can burn two or even all three levels together at the same time for super technique variants that do more damage. Fighters can also perform Alpha counters, quick block and counterattack techniques that damage the attacker. Each use of an Alpha counter burns one super meter level. Players also have the ability to block during a jump, do a standing overhead strike that hits crouched and blocking opponents, and perform chain combos by canceling moves into other moves. ~ Kyle Knight, All Game Guide
