DESCRIPTION
From acclaimed developers Raven Software comes the sequel to the third-person adventure title Jedi Knight. Taking place several years after the first title, the game's protagonist Kyle Katarn has forsaken the Force, for fear of succumbing to the lure of the Dark Side. As a new threat to the galaxy emerges he is forced to once again take up arms and make use of the power that almost destroyed him. Having allowed his powers to languish over time, Kyle can initially only make use of standard weapons, which include the blaster, stormtrooper rifle, and bowcaster. Soon however, he is able to wield a lightsaber; the Jedi weapon of choice.
With it, Kyle is able to deflect laser shots and deal out considerable damage in melee combat. It can even be thrown at distant enemies. As you progress through the title, Force powers such as those made famous in the movie trilogy are learned and include: Jump, Push, Pull, Speed, Heal, Grip, Mind Trick and Lightning. Morale also plays a significant role in the game. A group of enemies without their commander will be reluctant to fight a Jedi, and some may even flee. Attacking with a projectile weapon for example, will be far less intimidating than liberally using your Force powers and lightsaber.
Locales to be traversed consist of a mixture of both old and new. Familiar worlds such as Nar Shaddaa, Yavin 4 and Cloud City are featured in the title, along with all-new locations.
The multiplayer component features an array of modes, from the standard Deathmatch and Capture-the-flag to all-new ones such as Holocrom and Jedi Master. The former scatters Jedi powers (in the form of power-up icons) around each level, allowing players to collect and use them as they desire. When killed however, a player will forfeit all the Force powers he has obtained up to that point. The Jedi Master mode sees one player marked as the Jedi Master. Only he can wield the Force, and only he can gain points. The objective here is to kill the Jedi Master and usurp his power, in turn making you the only person capable of scoring points. ~ Gavin Frankle, All Game Guide

Gameplay was fun I just wish that you had a bit more control over the game and story....love multiplayer however.”

“Celebrating it's 10 year anniversary next year, Jedi Knight 2 is a true underrated PC gaming classic. Throwing you in the shoes of Kyle Katarn, an ex-Jedi and a New Republic operative in the Star Wars universe, you go on a journey through the galaxy as you track down a Dark Jedi called Desann, who Kyle believes killed his long-time partner Jan Ors.
During your adventure, you get to visit the Jedi Academy on Yavin IV led by Luke Skywalker, where you reconnect with the Force and discover your old lightsaber. As the game progresses, you periodically learn more of your lost forcepowers, and in no time, you'll be throwing stormtroopers left and right with your powerful force pushes, grips and lightning. You truly feel like you're a real renegade Jedi and in full control of your abilities and not bound by the Jedi Code.
The greatest feature of the game however, is the lightsaber combat. Even after 9 years of it's release, Jedi Knight 2 still features the most accurate and satisfying lightsaber combat ever made. You can swing your saber in different directions by using your movement keys, (WASD) so if you want to make a horizontal swing to the left for example, you must press your left strafing key (A) and diagonal uppercuts by pressing A+S or D+A and so on. You also obtain different lightsaber stances (Fast, Medium, Strong) which all handle very differently and each have different special moves like backstabs and overhead slashes. The lightsaber system is immensly satisfying and it's really flexible in the way of how it lets players to come up with their own combos and easily switch between different stances. There's just nothing like it out there.
The last aspect about the game which matters to me the most, personally, is the multiplayer. Which at first glance might seem like a typical fast paced multiplayer on the Quake 3 engine, Jedi Knight 2 is actually highly skill-based and requires fast reflexes and timing to master. The game featured several different gametypes, such as FFA, TFFA, CTF and more. The thing that's common with all JK2 players is their sense of honor and respect for skill, and not surprisingly, due to the nature of the game, many players were inspired by Samurais, their code of conduct and that's why you would come across clans like Bushido and S&H (Skill & Honour). When you'd enter a deathmatch game, people would often engage in an all out FFA, but most of the time, the players would gather around the map and hold their own duel tournaments and just chat with eachother. In alot of ways, the multiplayer seemed a lot more like an MMO due to it's social community.
When the game launched, it was very clear to everyone that the multiplayer was buggy. However, as time went by, the bugs became a part of the game and embraced by the players. Some of the intentional features like being able to do a backslash in midair for example, became revered skills and cornerstones of competitive playing.
Eventually, the developers released a 1.04 patch for the game, but most of the players deemed the updated version inferior, ironically because they fixed many of the bugs that had now become an integral part of the game. So, most of the long-time players and those who were active in the clan scene, reinstalled their games and went back to the original 1.02 game, which became regarded as the "true JK2 experience" and rightly so.
As the 10-year anniversary looms in the horizon, it is sad that so few people are here to celebrate it. Many of the players have long quit the game and moved into other things, while some dedicated veterans still roam on the servers and occasionally get together to relive their nostalgic memories and share old stories. Jedi Knight 2 was without a doubt, the singlemost amazing and influential gaming experience of my life and I'll never forget the people I met and the games I played there.
Jedi Knight 2 1.02 Forever.
