Based on Todd McFarlane's popular hellspawn super-hero, Spawn is similar to Midway's War: Final Assault. Players select one of 12 characters (including the Violator, Grace and Twitch) to engage in series of third-person death matches taking place in and around the city's trashy alleyways and abandoned warehouses evocative of the grim comic book series. Each character can pull of combos and special moves, and each has a unique weapon, such as Spawn's death sword, Brimstone's doublesaber and the Curse's grafted-on chain saw. Some weapons are short range while others are projectile. Crummy camera angles (adjusted by constantly tapping the view button), redundant action and unbalanced gameplay (some characters are much stronger than others) mar an otherwise marginally fun, graphically impressive, musically rocking (in an '80s metal kind of way), heavily violent game. Four machines can be linked for Battle Royal and Team Battle modes. One-player games are linear and involve taking out bosses one by one. Fans of Quake and Power Stone 2 will enjoy this game. ~ Brett Alan Weiss, All Game Guide
