The first video game to include intermissions between levels, Space Invaders Deluxe is the sequel to Space Invaders. Just like in the original game, you control a laser base that moves left and right along the bottom of the screen. Your job is to shoot endless waves of invaders that march back and forth and descend toward you. Four stationary shields, which slowly get destroyed by missiles, are your only line of defense. Occasionally, a flying saucer that you can shoot for bonus points floats across the top of the screen.
Space Invaders Deluxe adds a few new elements of play to the Space Invaders formula. A special blinking flying saucer that can be hit only when visible shows up from time to time. All the invaders have returned from the original game, but this time the sequence varies and some of the aliens expand and contract. Some of them even divide in two when shot. From an aesthetic standpoint, a rainbow of colors has been added to the game via an overlay. ~ Brett Alan Weiss, All Game Guide
