Millennia ago, six demon kings, known as the Revenants, ruled Rathenna with tyranny. They remained in this world by using their powers to claim the bodies of mortals.
The only person to ever stand up to this previously uncontested power was the great hero and warlock, Harbinger. He hunted the Revenants, one by one, and took their souls by casting them into the well of souls. But, even with everything Harbinger accomplished, the Revenants survived.
Your father, now on his deathbed, tells you to seek out his brother Andrus after he is gone. The horrid winter was too much for your father to take and now, after his death, you must travel to Madrigal to seek out your uncle. The journey to the river crossing takes you hours and there are no other travelers with whom you can hitch a ride. Finally, you come upon a ferryman who knows the way to Madrigal and your journey begins in earnest.
The path you have chosen is akin to the heroic tales of Harbinger and the banishing of the Revenants. Now it is your turn to finish what Harbinger started and return the world to peace. Soulbringer is a single-player RPG adventure in which you guide the hero and battle adversaries in the 3D world of Rathenna.
The game begins at the docks of Madrigal. Your first task is to dispatch of some rogues for Andrus, then talk to the townspeople. Soulbringer contains quests and sub-quests you can complete or leave open at your own discretion.
The game plays in real-time, including battle sequences. You can equip yourself with several different weapons and magical spells that are available through action keys and create combo attacks based on the type of weapons you're using. You have the option of storing them under names of your choosing.
Melee weapons available to your character include knives, spades, swords, axes, clubs, maces, war hammers, spears and staves. You will also find ranged weapons such as bows or crossbows. Spells also serve to aid you in your quest and are based in five categories: fire, earth, air, water and spirit.
Fire spells are offensive in nature, while earth spells aid in defense by making you more resilient to damage. Air spells enhance your abilities while decreasing your opponents' in close combat, water spells help you heal and recover and spirit magic allows you to speak with the dead, fight demons or destroy undead creatures.
Specifically, there are 11 spells (none of which you know at the beginning of the game): Firebolt, Minor Shielding, Death's Recollection, Flare, Minor Heal, Poison Blade, Spirit Knives, Firefly, Soul Seeker, Fear Bolt and Fools Gold.
Armor can also be purchased in the form of caps, helmets, coats, vests, sleeves, gloves, britches and boots to help shield you from damage. The level of armor corresponds directly with the level of the game you have most recently completed. Throughout the course of the game you can buy, sell or trade items with merchants and eating food (such as apples) replenishes your health.
Your father prophesied all too well the oncoming fate of Rathenna and knew of your destiny to follow the same path as Harbinger. Complete the quest and send the demons back to where they belong and save the world from the same fate as your father. ~ Nick Woods, All Game Guide
