DESCRIPTION
Namco Bandai's weapons-based fighting series makes its high-def debut with Soul Calibur IV. New characters, environments, and play modes highlight this fourth installment of the fast-paced brawler. A special tournament with a mystical prize has drawn combatants from across the galaxy. Familiar fighters from previous Soul Calibur games are joined by several newcomers, including Hilde, Scheherazade, Angol Fear, and even Yoda from the Star Wars universe. Characters will challenge each other in an assortment of exotic locales while mastering new techniques in combat.
The one-on-one fighting system now features critical finishing moves, allowing players to initiate devastating, cinematic coups de grâce to weakened opponents. Characters also wear destructible armor, which can shatter during fights to expose vulnerable areas. Play modes include Story, Arcade, Training, and Active Matching Battle, an endurance-type match that challenges players to defeat as many enemies as possible. Custom fighters can be created and taken online for versus matches, and new equipment and other items can be earned by completing objectives in the mysterious "Tower of Lost Souls." ~ Scott Alan Marriott, All Game Guide

“I've always been a fan of the Soul Calibur series and this game was no exception. You couldn't imagine how excited I was when I learned I'd have the ability to chop people up as Yoda. It was crazy! As for the game, it's a very good entry into the series with few flaws.
The characters are good. Many of the fighters from Soul Calibur III return in Soul Calibur IV. I felt right at home with my favorite Nightmare. I also made some new favorites in Yoda, Hilde, Zasalamel and others. Each moveset is different and offers unique strategies depending on who you choose.
As far as the basics, go, the controls are easy to pick up and play. You might find yourself button mashing at first, but don't worry, give it some time and you pick up on the different attacks and how to use them.
The stages are also well made and I think the differences between them. Some are small and open, making them good for ringing your opponent out, while others are big and closed and feature tough sword-on-sword fights. My personal favorite is probably the pirate ship.
Overall, the single-player modes are just as fun as playing against a friend or other real-time opponent. The story modes give you a background of each of the characters and then leave you fighting five battles for victory. The Tower of Lost Souls is my favorite, where you can either ascend or descend. Ascending features 50 floors of tought battling, with a tough boss at the end of each one. Descent is a survival mode that lasts until you lose. The Arcade mode has 8 battles in which you get a final score that you can post onto the online leaderboards after you complete. The multiplayer is a very enjoyable experience as well.
Overall, SCIV hit the spot when it comes to being the weapons-based fighter it is. I was impressed by the graphics and still play this one a lot. A very solid game. 4 out of 5 stars. ”
