DESCRIPTION
Dr. Eggman (known as Dr. Robotnik in the US and Europe) strikes yet again and, as usual, Sonic is the only one to stand in his way. This time Dr Eggman has used the Master Emerald to create an evil called Chaos. By creating this evil Dr Eggman hopes to rule the world and create Eggman Land.
Sonic Adventure contains more action than previous Sonic titles and is his first true 3D game. There are various types of action that is mixed throughout the game. At one moment you can be frantically smashing buttons against a missile firing boss then hitting the slopes for snowboarding. Collect rings as you create Sonic booms jumping from platform to platform and finally using tips from the friendly locals that hint at where your adventures may take place next.
However, Sonic Adventure does not only track the adventures of Sonic but also many of the characters he meets on his merry way. A total of six other characters can be controlled, each with different abilities, storylines, and goals. These characters include: Sonic's spirited and armed with a mallet girlfriend Amy, E-102 who comes intact with target guided lasers, Big the Cat on a quest to find his frog, the overly competitive Tails, Knuckles who can hover in the air and has a mission to uncover shards of the Master Emerald and discover the secret character Super Sonic.
Control wise, players have full control over the camera angle thanks to the digital pad and analog L and R buttons. One of the features of Sonic Adventure concerns the game's Chao/A-Life system that takes advantage of the VMS and is similar to Tamagotchi. During games players find A-Life eggs called Chao that can be hatched. The creatures can then race, breed with others, or be downloaded to a VMS for a mini quest. Also, by linking up VMSs with a friend you can have two-player battles as well as upload critters back to the adventure to breed with, hopefully, a stronger and more experienced Chao.
Game environments include: Windy City which is a living city environment, a tropical holiday resort level where islands are linked by man made structures and Sonic's incredible abilities, red mountain that is set inside a volcano, speed highway, twinkle park bumper car race, casino gambling spree, a typical ice world that ends in a snowboaring chase scene, a number of high tech levels set upon Eggman's carrier, and plenty of others. ~ Brad Penniment, All Game Guide

“I've been a fan of Sonic ever since I was little. I'd say this is one of the best games in the series.”

“A classic and ambitious game with a sweepingly epic plot, from the days when Sonic Team appeared to actually care. Did not like Big the Cat's missions, but everyone else had varyingly entertaining gameplay, even if sometimes rough in implementation.”

“I bought a Dreamcast JUST so I could play as Sonic after so many years! XD Taking Sonic through brand new, breath-taking 3D environments was too amazing for words, and the music was just as kick-ass as ever.”

“Went about halfway through Sonic's story. Also tried to really nail down the whole Chao A-Life thing; I never got that. They are supposed to be these complex little virtual pets.. I need to buy some...”

“The best sonic game, to this day. I especially enjoyed the way, you could play as different characters (except big, the cat) and how their stories cross paths, and intermingled perfectly with the other characters at specific times. Very well done.”

“Despite being very glitchy, rough around the edges, and featuring a legendarily bad camera, the fast-paced gameplay and exploratory elements still hold up. It's one of the few 3D Sonic games that had the right idea.”
