“Congratulations, you're playing an absolute classic. :D In many ways, this is the first game to be a true psychological horror game. Unlike Resident Evil, it didn't rely on cheap scares; the mood is much more supernatural and dark than RE's as well.
The nice thing too is that EVERY Silent Hill game is like this. Most people consider Silent Hill 2 to be a bit better than 1, and it certainly has a more straightforward story. I don't think I'll ever be over the first game, though.
This is the only game I've ever played that could absolutely terrify me. I've seen all the scary movies, all of David Lynch's films, and I've played most every other horror game, and NOTHING has ever been as horrifying to me as Silent Hill. I think it's the anticipation; it uses radio static, darkness and snow (ash?) SO effectively to build up anticipation that by the time you actually run into something like a skinless dog, it doesn't MATTER what it does or looks like, you're already pissing yourself.
I have one moment I'll never forget from this game, and it's from a time when I wasn't even playing it seriously. I was over at my (now) brother-in-law's house trying to get all the endings; I even had strategic savegames in place to make the changes to get each ending. I came out of the bar in the second half of the game wielding the pipe. (I like the pipe; it may be slow, but it's got a great range, great power and needs no ammo.)
As soon as I got out the door, my radio started screeching at full volume. Two skinless dogs were waiting, just pacing around outside. They were close enough, so I instinctively held R2 and jammed Square (I think) to swing the pipe; in the time it took to draw back, one of the dogs saw me and leaped for my throat.
My swing caught him IN MID AIR and KNOCKED HIM TO THE GROUND. :D It was so great, my brother happened to see it. I'll never forget it!”

“10 years after release, this game is still scary and insanely atmospheric, thanks in part to good art direction and sound production. Sadly the dated graphics make it easy to miss crucial items in the game that lead to the good ending.”
