DESCRIPTION
Konami's celebrated survival horror series known for its surreal atmosphere and supernatural enemies makes its debut appearance on the Xbox 360 in Silent Hill: Homecoming. Players assume the role of Alex Shepherd, a soldier recently discharged from a military hospital who returns to his home town only to find his brother and father missing, and his mother catatonic. The story takes players from Shepherd's deserted hometown, where citizens go missing every day and strange creatures have begun to roam the vacant streets, all the way to the notoriously fog-laden city of Silent Hill on a quest to save his loved ones.
As in previous games in the series, the streets and buildings of Silent Hill are filled with bizarre and aggressive creatures, but unlike the civilian protagonists in those games, Shepherd actually has military training and is thus quite handy with both firearms and close-quarters combat. The action is frequently interrupted by puzzles of varying difficulty that often require graphic-adventure-style exploration and discovery. Players are given a journal to help keep track of any written and visual clues they may encounter during these sojourns, a feature designed to help gamers make sense of Silent Hill's trademark transitions between the real world and its darker alternate dimensions. ~ Christopher Brown, All Game Guide

“I liked this game much better than I expected based on other reviews I've read. I felt it fit in with the Silent Hill series fairly well (as a side story). All of the issues I had with the game were at the design level. Only being able to pick up two ammo clips. The dodge system. Enemies that can nearly stun lock with cheap spammed attacks. Still, certainly worth the $15 I paid.”

“Very creepy, very dark, very cool. The first of the silent hill games I have ever played. Complete with a handful of choices that lead to alternate endings. I really enjoyed this game.”

“Played Trials HD, took back Unreal Tournament 3 and picked up Silent Hill Homecoming in it's place. I'm afraid I can't say much about Silent Hill Homecoming just yet as I haven't really played it...”

“I was sorely disappointed when we bought this game. I watched Rob play through the first time, as I often do, and I was so sad to find that I really wanted the game to end so we could play something else. The story had so much potential, could have been something great, but it wasn't.
Alex could have been an interesting guy, Josh could have been the next Laura, but they weren't. Instead, Alex was some weird mix of James Sunderland and Henry Townshend and Josh was just an annoying little snot. By removing the internal monologue I felt completely disconnected from Alex, where as I loved James and Heather and Henry because of the insight into their personalities the internal monologue gave us. But instead Alex seemed completely bland; with no opinions of his own he simply states facts such as "This guy's dead." What happened to lines like "Who could have done something like this?" or "This...this is blood."? The rest of the characters seem to be thrown in simply to advance the story and there was never really any reason to care about them beyond how they could help me advance to the next area. You want your damn rabbit? Here it is, just let me get out of here.
The combat system was god-awful and just generally made life difficult, especially when the monsters with obscure weaknesses were thrown into the mix. I'm not the greatest gamer by any means, but the dodging and whatnot seemed completely unnecessary. Doors and holes in the wall blend into the background so well I had to rely on GameFAQs fairly often to find my way through. I spent half an hour wandering the same segment of Alchemillia Hospital before I finally realized that I was looking at a door, not part of the wall.
Finally, I had a problem with the over use of 'scary' elements. Flesh doors? Pyramid Head? They didn't need to be there. I understand that Pyramid Head was meant to be Alex's father's executioner, but if that was the case the honestly Alex should not have been able to see him. To me, it seemed they were just trying far too hard to scare the player. The things that creeped me out the most in the old Silent Hill games was not the unknown, but the familiar. Seeing a place like the neighborhood I live in deserted, dark and foggy, left me with chills. Finding out that Henry had, unknowingly, been living with a corpse in his wall freaked me out, especially when I realized the apartment I had almost bought looked uncomfortably like the ones in South Ashfield. Sure, flesh doors and cultist-infested factories are pretty freaky, but they just didn't leave an impression in my mind.
Homecoming had so much potential, but it was all wasted because Foundation 9 and Double Helix did not seem to grasp the true essence of Silent Hill. The only saving grace was Akira Yamaoka's soundtrack, but that's neither here nor there.”

“I won't argue the fine points of all the criticism made against this game, but I will say that the atmosphere was the most intense and oppressive that I've seen in a game. Well done!”
