“Compared to Nexuiz or an old-style commercial FPS like Doom or Quake, compared to Doom or Quake, yeah, I agree, it lacks a narrative, but compared to Nexuiz or OpenArena, where single-player is just DM against bots, Saurbraten has a more linear, working-through-the-levels feel. Though it still sux in comparison to most commrecial FPS single-player mode. I still prefer Nexuiz, it just plays better IMO, feels snappier and quicker to me.”

“i know what you mean about saurbraten and i do sort of agree... it just needs something.. i dont know what that something is.. but it needs it. Doom has something it doesnt.... Quake has something it doesnt...

I suppose its something to do with the progression.. it doesnt feel like the game is getting progressively more difficult, the levels aren't getting progressively more exciting, the weapons aren't getting progressively more powerful... you know what i mean? the framework is there for a decent oldschool fps, but its just missing that progression”

“Yeah, I do now that you mention it, your just dealing with more of the same 5 or 6 monsters as before. Doom and Quake and Wolf 3d for that matter started with a few easy monsters and incrementally added more baddies as you progressed from level to level (I never really thought about it before).”
