Samurai Shodown 3 revolves around the attempts of a dozen fighters to hunt down and destroy the demon Zankurou. The fighters must engage each other in combat, and eventually one will prove him or herself to be strong enough to take on and defeat Zankurou himself.
Players have a total of 12 characters to choose from, with a few new characters thrown in along with longtime staples of the series. Each character comes in two varieties: a slash mode and a bust mode. Slash characters are honorable, and returning characters in their slash modes play similarly to their previous incarnations. Bust characters are dishonorable, and have a different set of moves from their slash mode counterparts.
Players must also assign their character a grade, which affects their style of play. Beginners grade characters get five free automatic blocks and take slightly less damage from attacks, enabling them to last longer in fights. Medium grade characters have no advantages or disadvantages. Advanced characters, on the other hand, are geared mostly for offense. They cannot block at all, but their power bars are always at maximum, enabling them to use repeated desperation moves.
The game's controls give players three slash buttons of varying strengths, as well as a kick button. Characters can dodge out of the way of projectile attacks, grab and push or pull their opponents, or even sidestep all the way around their opponents for an advantage. ~ Kyle Knight, All Game Guide
