KOEI returns gamers to the legends of ancient China to present this tenth edition of its Romance of the Three Kingdoms strategy role-playing game. As in earlier versions, gameplay combines the strategy of KOEI's Kessen with contextual role-playing elements pulled directly from the illustrious novel, designed to cast the player as an influential figure in the folklore and history of the land. Romance of the Three Kingdoms X uses an improved version of the series' "officer-based play" system, which allows players to take the role of one of more than 650 available officer characters, or to design their own officers from available options. A choice of five starting social ranks — Sovereign, Viceroy, Prefect, Vassal, or Free Officer — influences both gameplay and story development. ~ T.J. Deci, All Game Guide
