Road Riot 4WD is a driving simulation from Atari featuring dune buggies mounted with guns. The object of the game is to complete 15 rounds and win the championship.
Each of the 15 rounds takes place in one of 15 international settings. Races take place in Africa, Antarctica, certain U.S. States, and Mexico, among other places. Each course is designed to match the terrain of the sponsor country.
Obstacles fill the raceway. Animals, fallen trees, mud puddles, and even race fans will get in the player's way. Although the player will collect bonus points ("hazard pay") for ramming into obstacles, he or she will also be slowed greatly.
Players can race against one other human and two computer drones in a two-player game. They can also choose to race three computer drones in a one-player game. In either case, the player must finish the race in first place to advance to the next round. Second, third, and fourth place finishes will require additional credits to continue.
During the race, players can slow down their opponents by shooting them with their gun. Triggers are located on both sides of the steering mechanism. Typically, one shot will slow down a rival and multiple shots will cause his or her car to explode. Conversely, drones and human opponents will also try to shoot the player. Road Riot 4WD has special seats which vibrate when the player is shot by an opponent.
Players must complete all 15 stages within Road Riot 4WD to be crowned champion. ~ Anthony Baize, All Game Guide
