DESCRIPTION
In Quest for Quintana Roo for the Atari 5200, you get to help Yucatan Sam explore dozens of dangerous chambers that make up the mystical temple of the Mayan god, Quintana Roo. Your ultimate goal is to find the keys that open the ceremonial vault, allowing you access to the riches contained therein.
Prior to entering the building, you must evade poisonous snakes while climbing the outside of the temple to reach one of the portals that will allow you inside. As you go, beware the moon god's wrath reflecting from the eyes of the temple! After entering a portal, you will slide down a chute into one of the many temple rooms.
Once inside, you will encounter snakes, spiders and mummies, all of which can be lethal. If a spider or a snake bites you, you are given one minute to find a cure in the form of magic herbs. A gun and vials of acid will help you fight off enemy attacks, and you can replenish your ammo supply by finding treasure.
Other forms of treasure reward you with points or map rocks, the latter of which are used to open the ceremonial vault. To search for hidden treasure, you can take readings from a Geiger counter and use a chisel to uncover secret vaults.
The temple air is stale, so upon entering you'll only have one and a half minutes of breathable air. After exploring all the rooms on a particular floor, you will once again appear on the outside of the temple.
To finish a level, you must take all the map rocks to the map vault room and insert them into the correct holes within the vault. The map rocks are color-coded, but entering the rocks is done on a trial and error basis. If you enter a rock into the wrong hole, it will appear in a random location in the temple.
Once you complete your task, the game continues, but the creatures get faster and the map rocks and other items appear in different places. A different solution is required every time you play the game.
If you make to a certain point in Quest for Quintana Roo, you will be issued a secret code (password) that you can use to access higher levels after you have turned off your game system. ~ Brett Alan Weiss, All Game Guide
