Piranha, one of the countless bootleg modifications of Pac-Man that followed that game's sudden rise to fame in 1981, is one of the more elaborate attempts to disguise its origins. In Piranha, players guide a carnivorous fish around a playing field populated by four colorful squids. The maze is gone, replaced by a large open space filled with dots and the four ubiquitous power pellets, and even the remaining outer walls of the maze have been sculpted into the shape of waves. These massive changes to the game don't come without problems, though: the player's piranha flickers occasionally, making it easy to go the wrong way. Though tremendous cosmetic changes have been made, and the disappearance of the maze does significantly alter the mechanics of the game, Piranha is still just another Pac-Man clone. It was the flood of knock-offs like Piranha and Hangly Man that inspired Midway to create its own authorized mod, Pac-Man Plus, which later led to the official sequel, Ms. Pac-Man. ~ Earl Green, All Game Guide
