By the time of its release in 1987, Phantasie III: The Wrath of Nikademus was already anachronistic among role-playing adventure games. Barely improved from the original Phantasie two years earlier, like its prior sequel, Phantasie II, this was essentially the same game with different dungeons. There is little here not found in the first two games, unless you count the longer title as some sort of innovation. Like its predecessors, newly created parties often had problems with being wiped out by unbalanced encounters, but, also like its predecessors, once you got past this problem the game had an enjoyable playability. To put Phantasie III: The Wrath of Nikademus in context with what was technologically and creatively available in 1987, compare it to Nintendo's The Legend of Zelda released the same year. ~ Richard Gilliam, All Game Guide
